I have a Koso digital speedo on one of my ttrs. Battery memory/backup, but powered by the old ignition switched live feed that went to the original speedo (Open Enduro - digital) The way it works is when you turn on the ignition, it powers up the backlight and display. Also powers up if it detects movement from the sensor on the hub. Switches off if there's no movement for a while or if the key is turned off.
Anyway, when the temperature in my garage drops below about 5 centigrade, it powers up on it's own.
I noticed it also powers up if I flick the cut-out switch.
Initially I thought maybe there was damp in the unit, or shrinkage of something internal causing a short. It has never been rained on or directly sprayed with water (or anything else) When I noticed the effect of the cutout switch, I wondered if power was back feeding through it somehow due to a fault in something on the bike instead.
Disconnecting the bike battery turns it off so it's not using the backup battery to fire up.
My manual is a very poor copy and the circuit diagram is barely legible so I can't work out which way power goes to/from the cutout switch to find a clue.
Any brainwaves anyone? My brother suggests fitting a battery isolator so the battery doesn't go flat, which sort of makes the problem go away, but doesn't fix it. (He rides a Moto Guzzi, and flat batteries are a fact of life, as are the isolator switches)
are you sure that is the problem disconnect the positive side of the battery& PUT A 5 WATT BULB ACROSS THE BATTERY TO THE WIRE IF IT GLOWS YOU HAVE SOMETHING DRAWING THE CURRENT IF SO DISCONECT EACH MULTI PLUG WHILE IY GOES OUT COULD BE ALTERNATOR ETC
i bought a trailtec its got its own battery and you can also put a battery feed to it these are very good quality with many functions at a cost of around £75.00
Yes, I've got a Trailtech Endurance on my 325 TTR. It used to behave strangely sometimes, switching off for no apparent reason, but it's been pretty good for the last 4 years. I put the Koso on my project "black" bike as it has the idiot lights on it, it's very compact, and the vendor is 25 minutes from me. I can't make out if the problem is with the bike or the speedo, but on cold nights it switches on and by morning the bike battery is flat. Solution might be to move somewhere warmer!
Well I've had a few good cold nights now to experiment with.
Went through every plug and connection in the loom and tried components from my other bike. I realized it was also switching off for no apparent reason. Then I found that when the backlight went out the starter wouldn't fire either. Hmmm thinks I, might be the bike not the speedo. Disconnected a wire from the ignition switch and couldn't get the speedo to light up no matter what I switched, flicked or wobbled. Connected the 2 wires from the back of the ignition switch directly (bypassing the switch) and I couldn't make it switch off/flicker/play up on the starter no matterwhat I switched...etc etc. Bought a used genuine Yam ignition switch from the new Mr TTR, connected it all up and so far I've had no ghostly switchings-on in the night, and no deathly hush from the starter when I push the button! So there you go. Apparently a faulty aftermarket ign switch that seemed to allow current to track across when switched off in cold temps, yet not make a good positive connection when switched on either. Bizarre!
Because the bike has only just been resurrected and not ridden, I had no history of reliability or otherwise to go on. Bit of a headscratcher but I think I've got there now, fingers crossed.
