Hi John

I am probably not going to explain this very well but will try!

The main function of the spacers is to allow the axle to be torqued up such that they are solid against the inner race of the wheel bearings and the internal spacer such that the wheel bearings turn on the inner races which are held tight and solid.

If the spacers are a bit loose when you place them in the wheel bearings that shouldn't be a problem as they will be centred up when you torque up the axle. Same applies to front and rear.

If they are torqued up properly then if there is any play it would be in the bearings themselves.
