I've always used RS Bike paints as mentioned in the FAQs, but I always have to argue with them over whether the colour exists (French blue I think it was), then give them my name, they look up their records and lo and behold "Oh, it must exist, we've sold you 2 cans before" It's a perfect match for that horrid baby blue. Black's the way forward!
Sitting in South Africa I have been wondering what to do once I tackle some rust maintenance on the frame - previous owner did not have case guards installed and with the bike now at the coast (Cape Town) the rust has appeared.
For now I have used the steel wool and WD40 trick to get rid of the rust, and simply sprayed a clear lacquer (rust preventative apparently) over the spots for now. But, seeing I love the bike so much and she will be with me long term, I will have to remove the engine completely at some stage (daunting for a noob like me) to get to some hard to reach places on the frame to tackle the problem once and for all.
Will probably then have to cross this bridge - stick with the blue, or go black maybe.
The white metal tanked TTRs had two different colours, purple and French Blue as shown below. Most are French Blue but I have come across some purple frames hence why I bought the aerosol.
I've redone a pair of replacement foot rests and the rear grab handles and indicator mounts in Hammerite direct to rust Silver.
As mine's far from pristine, I did a reasonable rub-down on the components to get the worst of the surface rust and lose paint off, then straight on with the Hammerite.
