Hi all, I,m new to this forum and revisiting my youth and off roading. Help and advise are requested on purchasing OEM parts from overseas. I have found many cheap parts online in the USA and China(Aliexpress Alibaba). I would welcome feedback on security, reliability and duty payments incurred to any of above. Also is there a good supplier in UK or France? I am at present living in Southern Brittany with a 2002 ttr and hundreds of kilometres of trails to explore but need a new Starter, Sprag Clutch and bits. Thanks to anybodies help. Regards The old man. John
Hi John, I've bought some parts from Chinease websites (not for the ttr thkugh) and found the deliver and quality quite poor. The advantage of a specialist like Steve / Brian at totallyttrs.com to me is the supply of quality parts tried and tested on their own bikes in a similar environment that mine gets used for. And also the parts always fit.
I know cheap parts seem like a good idea, but really is false economy.
Hi rich, Thanks for that, I,m aware of Brian,s supply of parts but he can not supply me with a starter. He can not give a guarantee with this item. So I,m looking for any leads. It seems the USA has good prices but what about import duty? Any help there? John.
If you buy goods online from outside the EU for delivery to the UK, you'll have to pay Customs Duty (if over £120 value) and Import VAT at 20% (if over £18) on top of the purchase price (including duties), though Customs Duty is waived if the amount of the calculated duty payable is £7 or less.
If the seller uses USPS or UPS then the delivery is usually made in the UK by Parcel Force or Royal Mail who add a further £8-10.
Thanks John, I need a starter motor, other bits aswell. Brian can supply most of the main bits but I,m just interested to know of other peoples experiences and a cheap and reliable source of quality parts. Best regards and plenty of sun John.
Hi Pete, What I really need is a starter motor, any help to source one and other bits aswell? Brian can,t supply one, he can,t guarantee them. Any help welcome. John.
Hi Steve, Thankyou for that, good news to find another similar bike part. So now I have a ttr, klx and ybr 250 of swappable parts. Monday morning will find me on the breakers websites. Cheers John.
I recently purchased a throttle slide for the ttr carb from Boats.net in the Usa, the cost to my door (Ireland) was €88.00 euro and there wasn't any extra charge added by the postal service which was strange and to be fair it transformed the carb. I did the starter mod using the Yamaha majesty YP 250 starter and it is a simple job to switch end plates and i think the same bike uses the same sprag as well. It is a case of going through the part numbers of Yamaha as there will be a lot of common parts used throughout the range of bikes. If you go on to bike breakers and look for a good secondhand Yamaha Majesty YP 250 starter , they are cheap enough used and if you have an actual TTR starter just swap over the end mounting plate and job done. Parts from the USA are a good bit cheaper but add in all the charges and it works out as cheap to buy them from Brian/Steve and their service is second to none. For some things a bit of research is the order of the day to find common parts used on the different bikes.

Thanks Jaspa, I have been looking at alternative starters on ebay with regard to swapping out the internals or end fix housing. They are all Mitsuba 13 12v starters with different ends. So thanks for your input which has confirmed I can do this. I,ll let you know when I get a result In France apart from the language there is a baffling bureaucracy so inports are a problem. The upside is miles and miles of trails with no restrictions, farmers wave and the forests are huge. Egality is the order of the day. Thanks for help John.
OEM parts in Australia are very, very expensive, so I use Boats.com or Partshark - costs less than half the Aussie price (including shipping) - and at the moment no import duties for orders under a grand. Boats.com has cheaper shipping but takes longer to deliver.
Wish we had a totally TTRs here in Oz.
Thanks for your input Pendo, I,ll post my results when achieved, I hope soon. At the moment the veggy patch seems to be winning my attension as spring is sprung here in France. cheers.
