Easy to up shift, hard to downshift while engine is running
Permalink

Hello guys.

Lately it has been very difficult to downshift on my Raid. Upshifting is easy and smooth. However when i try to down shift, the lever just sticks there, and i have to step very hard on it to change the gear. This only happens when the engine is running.

At 1st gear, even when I pull the clutch all the way in, there is still some torque being transferred, and I have to apply a little brake to stop the bike from moving.

I changed friction plates, to no avail. Push lever is still properly aligned. I love my old ttr, and would hate to see its gearbox explode. Any ideas?

Thanks.

A few possibilities I can think of:

1. Regarding the gear change, down shift, it could be that the torsion springs are weak - replacements are available see here

2. The post that the large torsion spring works against is loose in its mounting. With hard gear changes the post can actually break the casing - see photo below of repair.

3. If the push lever is properly aligned and you have slack on the cable then it is possible your clutch basket "fingers" are grooved making the plates stick and not release properly. The fingers as shown in the photo below would be noticeably notched.

Some info here.
