Ttr turbo and oil supply lines
Permalink

hi I am here to ask about supplying oil to a turbo on my ttr 250 and I have seen these extra holes in the crank case (shown in picture) that have been bunged up even if these cant be use I would like to know what they are for and if there are any other places to tap oil from.

thanks, Ben

Hi Ben and welcome to the forum!

The blanking bolts in your photo are fitted to TTRs without oil coolers.

If you decide to use them for your turbo then you will need to fit a longer bolt on the inside of the crankcase cover to divert oil flow around your turbo. See here.

Out of interest, why are you fitting a turbo - do you race the TTR or is the engine in a kart perhaps?

I am sure we would appreciate some photos wink

Brian

Yes why ? Would have thought you'd need to run a oil cooler if you run a turbo as the turbo will add lots of heat to the oil. Be easier to buy a faster bike.

Thanks so much Brian and I am fitting a turbo to my ttr not so much for the performance science I just bash around trails in Australia although performance is good but just to say I'd done it and for the awesome noises it will make haha. And also which bolt is supply and return.

p.s. I will make sure to post photos when this project is complete but will be a couple months scince I am completely restoring it (rebuild, re spray, bearings shocks) due to it looking a bit old and neglected.

thanks, Ben

The oil pump sits at the bottom of the engine so I am assuming the bottom bolt is the supply but it will be obvious when you get the cover off.

The oil returning through the higher bolt would seem to feed into the filter housing.

If you trol through youtube you will find turbos on ttrs.

I recon if you have the time go for it, fuel mixture is the biggest chalenge but you may get a bit of an improvment and the noises you want

a great project to add to the i did this to a ttr file  . Bring it on

Bikes must be very cheap in ozz , wouldnt dream of destroying mine for some experiment .
Just go and buy a 300 2 stroke if you like power and noise .
Sound like your a fan of mad max .

Well mines only a 2001 model and I got it for $800 but it was looking a little rough and had manny issues so I fixed it up so now I want to fully redo it and give it more grunt. Anyway I don't know if that is cheap in other country's but it probably owes me about $1800 I'm not sure how much it will after this project.

oh and I just want to do it for the project since I enjoy fabricating and modifing things but making noises and going fast is a bonus when you are done

The bolts can be difficult to get out if they haven't been touched for a few years.

The most common approach, after spraying the area liberally with WD40 or similar, is to undo the smaller retaining bolts about quarter of an inch and put a drift on them to hammer the bolt out.

Once the large bolt has moved, unscrew the small bolt and give it another tap, and so on and so forth until you get the bolt out. Once you have started the large bolts moving it helps to spray them thoroughly with WD40 and tap them back in. Goes against common sense but it does help get lubricant into the joint.

The bolt heads on the large bolts are stopped from turning by nibs on the frame and subframe so don't try turning them until they are pushed past their retainers.

See this thread for lots of useful information and photos wink

If you unfortunately damage the link arm bolt then you can buy just the bolt here without having to buy the whole kit.

There has been a couple of threads this week on turbo charged ttrconfuse so can anyone supply some performance figures to show me why you would go to the trouble when you could go out buy some serious 2 stroke power in the form of cr 500 other makes are availiable .As a project I get it to say you can but im more intrested in some figures rather than a noise from blow off valve to see whether its worth the effort .

Have played big time over the years with superchargers turbo chargers on big an small motors it comes down to bang for money an a single cylinder bike or what ever you cant beat cc's up the motor size brian's big bore kit is the way to go on the motor. then onto a man with a flow bench for some porting work on the head then a big flat slide carb to bolt on should see 40-50 horses out of the wee beasty. Now Im a bit of a NOS fan an wet NOS setup could give you 50 - 60 bhp in short 10-15 second bursts with about 2-3 go's with a 4 pound bottle that would put a smile on your face an a brown mark in you pant's trying to keep the front down at the press of a button what ever gear the bike was in at the time. some times it's down to how the motor puts the power out. in the old days the xl 250 had 20 bhp the xl500 only had 32 bhp so a standard 250 TTr with air box mod better exhaust should be in the xl 500 territory power wise. my old Xr with it's cb250 rs motor standard would be lucky to make 12 bhp on a good day bore the motor out two 300cc put the Xl cylinder head [bit of home porting on the head] an she should be in the 30+ bhp range not bad for a 30 year old off roader an would have kicked some ass back then now she's just a pussy cat against a 2016 ktm
