Great feeling of history in your photos, Martyn.

I sprinted my Triumph, starting at Hartlepool in '76 and '77, then again at Melbourne (near Elvington in Yorkshire) in '78.

Standing start quarter miles - my quickest time was 15.564 seconds - terminal a smidgen under 90 mph.

Here's one of me and the '55 T100 in 1977 at Hartlepool

T100%2525206th%252520August%2525201977.jpg

The front wheel is just about six thou' off the tarmac - tee hee. smile

Memories - and that was last century! biggrin

Pete, it's not on the beach but on the "prom" about 8 feet (2.4m) above the beach.

080 (Medium).jpg

It felt as if the wheel was 6 inches (150mm) off the deck. The prom was just over a quarter mile and had a dog leg and toilets at one eighth of a mile.

A town Councillor complained that vehicles weren't allowed on the prom and the event (of many years) was stopped in the mid 80s and is no longer run.

Ha I like how you metricised it for me in brackets.

Cool event, trust a jumped up councillor to put a stop to it.

So if it scared you too much you could stop half way at the toilet before you wee yourself?!..

My earliest "bike" photo.

I was freeing up the frozen throttle cables so I could ride home.

Bugger that shot reminds me of cold winters and the two day a week 15 mile trip the College first year on a Yam fizz pop half a year on a xl 185 then the bonny for the next three an a half Dad never took his car test so he had a Reliant three wheeler for winter use. we had a shed full of bikes only one dad would not let me use was his AJS 500 jam pot. mum drove but took the car to work each day I only had a part time job an no money for a car and would never be seen dead in the Reliant remember coming home some winter nights thinking I was never going to make it I was so cold

It was a good Bike to me. Passed my test on it. Went all over the place. Seemed to stay upright too, even in the snow and ice. Kept it for years as a winter bike. Chromed mudguards were held together with a patchwork of aluminium patches and pop rivets. Engine rattled like a box of spanners bit it kept going. I eventually gave it away to a brave chap who restored it.
