Digital speedo issues - trouble shooting, repairs and alternatives - mega thread!

The speedo has just stopped working and and further inspection the what looks like the magnet in the center of the two washers has broken into 3 pieces. I took it to the local bike shop who said they have to order it from Japan, but the machanic glued it back together for the time being it's working for now. Any suggestions. Daz.

Thanks Cubber wink

To be honest, if the magnet isn't broken into too many pieces then I glue the parts together with Araldite and have had 100% success rate to date.biggrinbiggrin

I wouldn't fret Darren and just trust the repair.

Not sure why they break up in the first place though confuse

Just been looking on the internet for ring magnets, and found a site that supplies ring magnets for speakers. So that switched on the thinking light and  I found my wifes old mp4 external mini speaker that wasn't working anymore, so I demolished it and low and behold the magnet is 30mm outer and a 15mm inner diameter so I glued it between two M10 washers with epoxy. Now waiting until tomorrow for the glue to set and who knows... keep you all informed.

Here's hoping.

Daz.

Speaker magnet didn't work. It looked identical to the original one in size and shape and even managed to dis-assemble and re-assembleput it and put it back in to the original fittings, but with no joy.... no disbelief confuse Any more bright ideas.

Thanks Darren.

I didn't realise that it was an eBay type of operation. I would like to buy a couple of magnets but am a bit nervous about using the site as quite a lot of it isn't being translated cry

Also, is there any way around the phone check that seems to be needed before you can pay by PayPal? I can't see why that is necessary and am worried about receiving a call from China that might somehow be charged confuse

HI. Brian.
Sorry I have always ordered stuff through my friend he has a contact out there that deals with buying stuff for his business, so I'm not sure.I'm in work at the moment, but when I get home I'll speak to him and get back to you. These magnets I have ordered take a week or two to arrive if you want let me check them out when they arrive and I will let you know all about them. What's the price on them from Yamaha in the UK.

It does say 250 Yamaha and TTR - but I don't think it's for any TTR model that I've seen.
My TTR doesn't have the radiator shields that this kit shows, and the side panels are a different shape from mine. no

Being that I'm sceptical I wouldn't be chancing any purchase of the kit.  disbelieffurious

But then again - it's not a digital sender magnet either!  confuse

If you are changing the sprockets on your red TTR then you have a digital speedo driven off the sprocket shaft so the readings will be affected - slightly....

yeah , answered my own question on removal of sprocket cover. New Renthal get up fitted and on test run was good not to hear a "click" from chain every time I closed the throttle. I put my sat nav on to get speedo readings and equates to

speedo - 60kph = 30mph sat nav

               80kph = 40mph

               100kph = 50mph

               120kph = 60mph

That was lucky - even I can do those sums wink

Renthal = good! That's what I run - the R3 chain lasts better than the others I have tried.

should be easy to remember , even for me !

I think my bike accelerates a bit quicker now but reckon its reving the same to do 50mph as it did to do 60mph before sprocket change , does that sound about right ?

30mph- 48 kph

40 mph- 64 kph

50 mph- 80 kph

60 mph- 97 kph

70 mph- 113 kph

was going to make a laminated strip to help me remember (not much use in the dark though) and stick it on the top of my kph speedo

Hi all, fed up with a kph speedo so been dreaming about an aftermarket replacement such as an acewell.

Anyone swapped over to anything like this, and was it easy to do? (basic wire experience) worthwhile ? and whats the market value of a  second hand working kph oem speedobiggrin

The blurb suggest that it will work from the Hall senor as fitted to the TTR. Is this the function that you are relying on to get your mph reading?

Starting bid prices for the OEM speedos on eBay tend to be at around the £50 mark.

Thanks Brian, good to know it will work in theory, still need to know how complex a job it will be (and if they are any good/ robust)

I like the idea of essentially upgrading for £50 (that is flogging my working unit for £50 and buying a shiny new thing for £100)

It's mainly the MPH I'd like, altough revs (and even fuel) would and could be useful.

I'm mainly after a MPH reading altough Revs and even a fuel reading would be an added bonus for sure.

my readings above are in relation to fitting my bike with a 13/48 tooth sprocket combo( from 14/44) therefore different to your "true" readings which my bike had previous to sprocket change.

It looks as though there is around an inch of slack on the cable inner, whereby I can push it upwards.  If I turn the inner manually the speedo works, so it looks like it is not seating in the bottom section properly.

Any ideas, or is this just a new cable required?

Cheers

Electronic speedo rotor
Permalink

It works! Sort of. I followed Sergei's advice on building an electronic speedo magnetic rotor and fitted it a couple of days ago. I've got numbers on the speedo, which is exciting- it's just that they're not the right ones..The speedo seems to be underreading by around 25-30%.

Any thoughts? I didn't fit the magnets- 8mm Rare Earth- right on the outer rim of the 30 mm washer, they're recessed by around 5mm. I've never seen the OE rotor so don't know how critical rotor/magnet diameter is to accurate speed measurement. Any advice gratefully accepted.

With or without the speedo, I'm lovin' the bike!

Jim

The rotor width is 32mm.
And here are some pics of mine off a 1994 ttr250 Raid - in bits.
Hope this helps.

That's very kind of you, thanks Chris!

I think I'll move the magnets out closer to the rim of the washer- the O.D is 30mm, so my magnets are at around 25mm, quite a bit less than the stock fitting.

I'll try to post a photo when I'm done- but being a technophobe it might take some time..

Thanks again,

Jim

It depends if your speedo drive is from the front wheel (which is not affected by sprocket changes) or from the sensor on the gearbox sprocket (which will affect the reading)

ah thanks for that, i do indeed have the front wheel sensor, and can see where the massive cable goes all the way up to the back of the speedo. Cheers. I also put a beer can over the preload for the rear as you have done. marvellous look i must say. i chose VB, but may change to Boddingtons or perhaps even a redbull can to match the blue bike.

Update - fitted a new washer this morning (supplied by Brian) and the speedo is now working perfectly!

The old one that I took out was fairly bent and worn and looks like it was originally made from cheese!
