Fed up with the chain rattling against the Case Saver, but not wanting to lose that bit of protection:
I changed from 14/50(3.57:1) to 13/46(3.53:1), there's no noticeable difference in the overall ratio, the bike rides just the same, but, thankfully, the rattle has gone.
Incidentally, 14/50 needed 110 links, 13/46 needs 108, not the 106 I had expected.
Yeah its damn close to the saver with a 14 sprocket, and yeah little fiddly to get the clip on with needle nose pliers on an o ring cos your compressing the rings a bit. Lush getting a spunky new chain/sprocks on there tho ain't it
Regarding the chain noise from touching on the case saver. I trimmed a little (about 1-2mm) off the top rear most edge where it was hitting with a file and that gave enough clearance to stop the contact and noise. I currently use a 14:48 sprocket set and previously a 49 with no noise since trimming it.
Dion,
I did trim the saver, using files, I kept getting a "witness mark" at one spot where it rubbed, at about 12 o'clock. Maybe I should have shaved a bit more off, but I was sort of worried about weakening the saver, or leaving a vulnerable bit of case.
Anyway, this change means I can just swap the rear sprocket to a 50 for slightly more serious off-road play, probably with the same chain.
