On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline.
That first day Allied casualties were at least 10,000, with 4,414 confirmed Dead on top of the 800 Dead from Operation Tiger'that occurred at Slapton Sands some weeks before in the D-Day training exercises.
I have made this ride 5 times down from a camp site on top of the cliff's over Dog Green at Omaha beach the sight of some of the worst fighting and home too a 88 mm gun that took so many lives that day. and the setting for the start of Mr Tom Hanks film.
i was hoping to make it back this year but work got in the way so this is a vid of one of my trips down to the beach 4-5 years back just after dawn and some pic's of Dog Green on June 6 1944. and too you i say make it a place you will visit one day and spend five minutes thinking of them that gave there live's so you can live yours

Link to vid what it looks like today and some pic's of the same part of Omaha beach Dog green on June 6 1944

I went across way back when I was 18 and had a look round the beaches and visited the museums, as well as sampling a few pints of course! Interesting stuff, very brave boys, Its crazy to think that those Germans all of a sudden saw the horizon line go completely black with landing crafts, and they knew they were in trouble.

Totally agree Pug we should all take time to remember the deeds of those brave men some still only boys at the time .The losses on both sides should always be remembered.

.    "when you go home tell them of us

             and say

"For your tommorow we gave our today"

John Maxweĺl Edmunds 1916

Thanks for sharing Pug

When you stand there in the centre of the American British or German cemeterys In Normandy with the row after row of head stones It becomes very real an looking at the age's gives you a gut kicking for the total loss of life on both sides of young men who never got to go home afterwards. and as I have said it's one place everyone should go one day.
