Oil drain plug repair with teflon tape?

Hello guys,

So the last time I changed the oil, the drain plug inner thread (engine side) was stripped. I had no other choice but to drill the hole and re-thread it. Since I had to do it manually, the thread was far from perfect, but the new oversized drain plug goes in fine. However, the oil still leaks out in drops. 

I tried a gasket, new washers,... to no avail. The oil leak gets worse with gasket and washers. So I'm looking at teflon tape(the type you use to seal water pipes). I'm wondering if it will work. As far as I know, Teflon can withstand 300 degree +, and I doubt the engine ever reach that temperature. It is oil-resistant as well, and is widely used as a sealant.

Has anyone ever tried using teflon tapes for this type of repair? Does it work?

If it was me I would do a more permanant fix, PTFE tape is not that great when it comes to applications with vibration. Its the crush washer that does the sealing anyhow. smile

1432664743585.jpgIf I had to use something I would use this. But fixing correctly would be better. As said above it is crushing the copper washer that does the sealing.

If using a copper washer then it may need annealing to soften it up.

It is possible to buy special washers with a built in rubber section that might do the trick but can't recall the name of it no

I did a quick Google and couldn't find it but I found these bolts.

Them washers is called a Dowty washers one might do the trick but the head of the bolt has to be dead parallel to the case if the thread was cut a wee bit squ whiff it could be worse than a copper one but worth a try anyway

Well done Pug - Dowty - that's the ones!!!

There are two different types apparently. One seals around the threads and the other seals on the face of the bolt/union wink

Thanks for all the feedbacks guys. I will get one of those bolts. In the mean time, I used the tape for a temporary fix and so far I've had no problem yet.
