Change clutch plates without draining oil

Just wondering if I can lean the bike on its side and change the clutch plates without losing all the oil? Also is there a gasket needed? I have a 93OE and the manual I have is for later model, which does show a gasket.

if necessary I can dump the oil and reuse but if possible would prefer not too.  This technique has worked on other bikes, anyone done it this way on a TTR 250.

I'm with Pete on the re-use of oil.

What you propose can be done but for the saving on the small cost of new oil - is it worth it? confuseconfuse

The old oil, even if only used a day or two, will be contaminated with all the detritus from throughout the engine.

It would be far better for the new plates and the rest of the engine to not have the old sludge, swarf and shavings to contend with. wink

It's a small quanity of oil and reminds me of the saying, "don't spoil the ship for a ha'p'orth of tar" evileye

I love that oil!   No, just a question of nowhere to dispose of the old oil. I do intend to have the oil changed as soon as I replace the clutch. I'd rather do the clutch myself as the local bike guys are not that flash on anything more than oil changes, and even those improve with owner oversight.

now how to deal with the gasket! No parts available here (timor Leste) try paper and gasket goo.

I ended up sacrifying a deep stainless steel mixing bowl, the cheapest I could find on market imported from India.

After changing the oil, I pour the used one back in the can and bring that to the Petrol station where I bought previously.

Most petrol stations like TOTAL and SHELL have to accept taking the used oil in their can for "environment friendly disposal", free of charge;

even in West Africa it's a part of Environment program they signed for .

For not happy managers, I keep a spare can at home; I bring it with me to be sure they will take it at the same time as I buy a new can of motor oil.

Put the oil back to where it came from....
dig a hole / tip it in / fill the hole back in...
then some one ealse can use it in a couple
millon years...
Ultimate paying it foward...

Thanks for the offer, there is a post office but no delivery, no addresses. I think all the mail goes through Portugalaww

As it happens Ive got a sudden trip thru Oz with a day in Brisbane, so will hunt it while there.

Good point, there is one petrol station with western manager, I'll try that.  If that doesn't work then I can try petenz's ultimate green methodevileye
