Yellow goo in breather hose??

Hello guys. 

My bike is a Raid 1996. Yesterday I opened the crankcase breather ( conical thing just to the left of the air filter) and saw yellow goo dripping out, looked like yellow mayonnaise. Is this a mixture of oil and water from the crankcase?? Should I be worried?

Hello and welcome to the forum.

The matter of stuff in the crankcase breather pipe is an indication that the breather is working if nothing else. smile

However, the quantity, quality and consistency can be varied.

Mine tends to be a collection of water and oil - a sort of off cream emulsion.

It's usually a fair amount after wet, cold weather or after fording rivers or damp lanes.

The breather pipe should be cleaned out regularly to prevent too much build up.

The manual actually specifies it to be done at 6 monthly, 600 mile or 1,000 km intervals:-
Check ventilation hose for cracks or damage and drain any deposits. Replace hose if necessary.

If the build up gets too severe it could indicate an engine that's getting tired: worn piston, rings, valves, etc.

How much does yours produce? confuse Any photos? confuse

Thank you for the quick answer!

I bought this bike 4 months ago and have only maintained the mechanical parts. I never touched the breather until yesterday. I guess since I live in a humid area, the large amount of goo is normal.

On a side note, does anyone have a service manual for the Raid? The ones listed on the website are blue models only, and the specifications and part numbers are different.

Here is my bike. I just love the classic look. The new ones are just too modern for me :)

That a nice looking Raid - well maintained and clean.

This CLICKY LINK will take you to an article where manuals are discussed, it also has instructions on how to download them.

You may not be able to get a specific Raid manual but, in all honesty, the ordinary manual for the blue bike will give you basic information.

What's really different on your Raid? Tank, seat, side pods, hand grips, no kickstarter and that's about it. confuse

The engine (bar kickstarter) is 95% similar, forks, wheels, gears are nigh-on identical, electrics may not ALL match.

Surely the servicing and maintenance information will give you the gen. to keep your bike running well.

You are right. Some part numbers are different but mostly it is the same bike.

Now if only I could find a kickstarter set :)
