Hey everybody, my name's Teddy. This is where I'll be documenting my TTR fix-up. I'm an experienced rider but an amateur mechanic so any questions/comments would be much appreciated. Here goes nothin'.
This is my 2000 TTR250 the night I picked it up. Sorry for the crap picture, only one I have with the plastic on.
This was my good ol' 125 that I traded for the 250. Eleven years without a single problem, when I saw the ad I knew I couldn't turn away from getting another TTR.
Anyway, I gave the bike a test ride and washed it. Then I got to stripping the pieces off.
Overall, its not in too bad of shape. But definitely needs some work.
The starter gears are shot and sound like a blender full of nails, big surprise. I'm curious about it though because I don't get the "dreaded bang" I'm always reading about when I turn it off if anyone has insight or advice on that. I went ahead and ordered the two idler gears and I think I'm just gonna buy a new starter motor soon, ebay has 'em for around $70.
Here's the old idler gears.
I decided to start going through the top end while waiting for the starter pieces, but a rounded hex screw pissed me off and stopped me from removing the valve cover Anyway, I'm about to hit the garage and try again.
Catch y'all later,
Teddy

Yeah, just the part that holds the fender, good call. I was thinking I might just chop it and fabricate a little luggage rack/grab bar/light holder and screw a different fender to the bottom of it.
