I was walking in Glasgow City Centre today and just turned into Sauchiehall Street when I saw two police riders coming down the pedestrians only part. They were wearing blue and grey BMW textile suits on what looked very much like WR250's. I forgot to look at the plates to get the year. The bikes sounded fantastic and they were riding at walking pace through a very busy lunchtime crowd. I thought that they seemed very low, not the height I imagine WR's to be. They could be lowered of course. I also thought the back of the bikes around the tail light looked different to the 250. I'm not sure why as I've only seen them on the 'net but they just looked a little different.

I've done some snooping about online and have found a couple of articles and a thread on advbikerider about them. Some think they may be 125's some say 250. It seems the police are using them mainly to combat youths thrashing their bikes around housing estates etc. But they're also being used in pursuit in difficult to get areas hence the off-road style.

I've posted a pic I found online that seems to be the bikes in question. I remember the forks only being gold coloured at the top though. I may be wrong I only got a quick look today. One thing I know though is that they looked the cats pyjamas. Very nice.

Do any Scottish members have any info on these at all? Can anyone tell for sure from the photo if they are 250 or 125's?

Thanks.

Interesting!

They are WR250Rs or WR125Rs by the look of the exhaust cover.

I remember the distinctive angle of the exhaust. They definitely sit low though. I just thought it strange that they would chose the 250r, if that's what it is. They didn't sell much here if memory serves me and were only available for so long. Nice to see our money is being put to good use though. They couldn't be 250fs could they?

Seems like the exhaust on Yamaha 125 dirt/trail bikes is always on the left, 250 on the right. Thought I'd mention that since the issue comes up so often ... :)

This is a return to off-roaders for Glasgows boys in blue.

When I got my original TTR nicked in Glasgow about 7 years ago, the polis informed me it was probably running drugs from the dodgy housing estates. They used to chase the scroats on off-roaders but too many accidents caused the bikes to get withdrawn.

My bike was recovered but wrecked. They'd had a tip off about stolen quads and my bike was in the lock up with them.

Kick in the nuts, I'd bought it new and it only had 1500 miles on it.

There is a few forces around country using wr250s for patrol work on offroad areas often in response to illegal offroad riding.Officers using them in parks and open public places .Recently on ebay were some ex warwickshire wr 250f for sale.
