Differences between the Raid and Open Enduro models

There are quite a few Raid owners on here and it would be good to use the collective knowledge to update the table of differences to put in the FAQ.

This is what I have so far and corrections, additions, suggestions welcomed!

Brian

  1. The tank is larger on the Raid hence if you fill it right up its going to add weight over and above that of the OE
  2. The headlight assembly on the Raid is more suitable for road or use on night trials but it is a fairly hefty (4lbs weight compared to 1lb 4oz of the OE plastic unit)item with a mild steel protection bar
  3. The Raid has a lot of steel parts (swing arm, linkage arm and bottom shock yoke) whereas the OEs have these parts in aluminium
  4. The rear axle bolt on the Raid is shorter than the OE’s so, if upgrading the Raid to an aluminium swing arm, the longer axle is needed.
  5. The Raid doesn't have adjustable rear compression damping i.e. "Hard-Soft" clicker adjustment on the rear shock "reservoir whereas most OEs have them. The OE adjustable shock (yellow spring) will fit straight in.
  6. There are no grease nipples on the Raid’s rear suspension linkages or swinging arm pivot so they need to be dismantled occasionally to prevent them from seizing up (same on Y2K models sadly).
  7. The Raid’s side panels are more like “pods” - there is a useful plastic box under the left hand one containing the tool kit
  8. Chain size and gearing is different with a 520 on the Open Enduro and a 428 on the Raid
  9. The rear sub frame is also different as are the seat layouts – the Raid seat is lower (about 35” off the ground compared to the OE’s 36.25”) and flatter. It’s designed for more sat down, long distance work but is a lot better than the OE if you want to carry a passenger
  10. Rear footpegs on the Raid are mounted separately onto the sub frame and on the Open Enduro are small alloy ones mounted direct to the subframe.
  11. The rear grab handles on the Raid are quite a bit bigger than those on the OE.
  12. Some Raids have a relay in the wiring loom that doesn’t switch the headlight on until the engine has started. An excellent idea!

Unless one has a Japan market Raid. Alloy swingarm with greaseable shock linkages and adjustable compression damping! Probably other differences to eh

Uber competitive the Japanese market, expect all or most of the extras you'd buy for a European market model to be fitted as standard.
If it's been modified from standard in Japan my experience of 400's and 250's says you can get some quite exotic 'extras'

Hii there. I own a Raid and i am considering switching the swing arm to the OE one. Apart from the longer axle bolt that is needed, does anyone know if the length of Raid and OE swing arms is the same, or is the OE longer? Thankss :))

99% sure they are the same length. The ali swingarm was a popular upgrade for Raids back in the day when they were more readily available!

Thanks Brian! I just got a new swing arm, one from the Open Enduro model, and i can confirm that the length is the same indeed. I would like also to make my Raid a bit taller as it is a bit short for me right now. Because, as i have read in this forum, changing the seat to the OE one requires also the OE tank, i was thinking about replacing my rear suspension to the OE one. That is because i think that the OE one is a bit larger, but maybe i am mistaken. If anyone knows whether the OE is taller because of the rear suspension or something else, i would really appreciate the information. Thanks in advance :)))

I have a raid and it has adjustable rear suspension with the rebound clicker on the bottom of the shock and also a remote compression clicker, though I’ve no idea if that was retrofitted before my ownership.

Another thing I believe is different is the front forks doesn’t have the schrader valves on the top of the forks, weirdly they have a tapped hole on each fork top with a flush fitted bolt but no valve fitted.

Searching through the forum i noticed that some people mention that raid version has 8:1 compression ratio rather than 10.2:1 that OE is supposed to have. Is this accurate? I am just wondering as this difference is not listed above and from what i see the top end parts for both are identical so i dont get where the extra compression comes from. Thanks!

I looked into this question of shocks recently as I needed to renew or replace mine on my Raid (though ithe previous owner fitted an OE shock). I’m 99% sure i saw somewhere on this forum or somewhere else that the length of the shocks are the same, the raid shock body and stroke itself is shorter, but the bottom clevis mount is longer than the OEs so the overall length is still the same. in any case the OE shock is considered better as there is better adjustability. 

you might want to check the bottom mount on your shock, as I believe on the OE there is the ability to adjust the length of the shock from 400-450mm by winding the bottom mount up or down on the threads so the raid shock may be the same
