Even though we have a bit of nice weather ahead, I am thinking about winter maintenance for the TTR which may include the top-end. The bike is now 10 years old, runs OK but I really don't know much about it's maintenance prior to my getting it 3 years ago.
Seems like a valve job, timing chain, etc. certainly wouldn't hurt anything but I was was wondering about honing & new rings since I would be that far into the engine anyway.
For those of you who have disassembled their TTRs, how well did the factory sleeve, piston, etc, hold up? I'd rather just hone & put in new rings if the cylinder is in good shape or is a new standard bore piston worth doing anyway?
Of course if it need boring anyway then that would be a different story.
My experience of honing is not good as the engineers seem to take too much off the cylinder wall in order to get a good finish. Even with new rings, the worn piston and the enlarged bore means that the engine might well start using oil again within a few thousand miles.
The short term solution (if the bore isn't damaged or too badly ridged) is to bust the glaze with something like 360 grit paper working both ways at about 45 degrees to give a cross-hatch effect and then just fit new rings.
However, if your engine is using oil, this is just putting off the inevitable and it is worth considering, as Truxx suggests, a rebore and new piston which will probably last the rest of the TTR's lifetime. It means that you save having to do two strip downs, oh yes, and a head and base gasket
