Oh dear, Neil - you should have taken the bike on holiday and used it.
If it was working before being laid up and there is power in the battery then it would more than likely be a rougue connection/poor earth that is shortng out somewhere.
Check the safety switches - stand, neutral and clutch - to see if they are the cause.
Does the starter or its solenoid make a clicking sound?
Carefully shaking the loose end of wires and tweaking the earth pionts may persuade it to work.
Failing that then it's down to checking all the ignition circuit and electrial connections generally.
have you checked the battery is at full capacity. it would light neutral light ect but maybe not enough power to turn starter. i would give it a charge then try simple things first as the bike has stood and was working ok prior to this.

No joy as yet, if the battery was the problem, surely the electrics wouldn't work...as it is I have lights, indicators, horn hazards etc all working.
No noise at all when I press the starter button, can't hear the solenoid or anything.....just the neutral light dims.
Interestingly, when the kill switch is set to on the neutral light doesn't dim...when its off, the neutral light dims...I'm at a loss here....looked at all of the connector blocks under the seat and tank....they're all looking ok, can't find any loose wires or anything!!
If the neutral light is dimming when you press the starter button then there is a current draw so the switch is probably OK.
It is possible that the solenoid is taking current but not actually working if it isn't even clicking.
If you have been following Mogwai's "lemon" thread you will know that he had a similar issue that turned out to be a faulty solenoid.
To test if it is the solenoid at fault, I suggested the following:
A quick way to check if its the solenoid that's faulty is to short across the terminals with something fairly solid and metallic! If the starter then turns over its most likely the solenoid or the connections to it.
Thanks Brian, I'll have to check the solenoid tomorrow.
Bit of an update, managed to. Bump start it today and it ran perfectly ok, rode it for 10mins round the block....got home and turned it off....only for it to not start again....same issue.
So it bump starts and runs perfectly.....just won't start on the button.....now I wish I had a kick start!
Finally got the bike started, replacing the solenoid is a tricky job, not much space to work with but did it, and replaced the battery at the same time! Now to get out and enjoy some of the warwickshire lanes this weekend finally....it's been a long 6 weeks off the bike!
