Decided to Put it all back together again with the old gaskets just to try it out.
Since stripping the sprag clutch it's no longer clunking when i turn the engine off so that's a bit of good news...
It still had the rattling noise though so i decided to tighten up the new timing tensioner by removing the cap bolt and screwing the tensioner tighter against the chain. It didn't feel right but but i had to really put a bit of effort and the noise went away
By this time it was getting late and my helmet was at my house so didn't have time to test it but i'l find out in the morning...
Not sure to be honest.. but the tensioner isn't actually adjustable it just works off spring tension...
Anyway, i was wrong still not fixed :( The sprag clutch is now working perfect no clunking but the tapping is still there...
So i give up it's going up for sale as it is so my new question :
How much can i realistically ask for it ?
I was thinking about just putting it on ebay but i think when i mention the fault and the work it's had (bearing in mind it'll need new head and base gaskets again) i think most people will be put off.
I paid about £1100 for the bike and I've spent easy another £500 on it since then lol
Hi Dave Sorry for the delay just thought I'd give you an update. Rattle is much quieter now after refitting the clutch with oiled friction plates. I also replaced the sprag clutch & driven gear as both had uneven wear / pickup. Just one question why did you replace the inlet manifold? Curiously it will only line up carb to air box when it is the wrong way up!! Got to go Happy Xmas & All the Best for 2015. Peter
I am bumping this thread and hoping for some more info. I too have a bike that has developed this noise. It has 10,000 kilometres on it and is in reasonable condition but this noise has progressed over the last week or two. I checked the cam chain last week and it seemed fine. I did a quick check of the shims and the throttle side inlet valve was a little tight but my feeler gauges are too rusty for an accurate check. - So I will have to get another set.
Check that the exhaust guard isn't loose. A customer of ours recently completely stripped his engine because of a buzzing noise which turned out to be a vibration from a slightly loose exhaust guard

Checked thanks. The noise definitely coming from the other side of the bike and under load
