In May 2012 - I know it's some time ago and history - Brian and I took Bouncing Bob out after some winds and rain to look at the lanes.

We found a few trees that had been blown over and a few lanes that were a bit worse for wear. bleh

There is a dead end lane in Devon which is renowned for a glorius view from a hill top overlooking the sea with a bird's eye view of Sidmouth.

This location is known as "The View Point" but here is another view from there

My TTR, Brian's and Bob with his TTR. wink

Ah yes, I remeber it well. biggrinbiggrin

This is the other view from the hill

Lovely pics guys!

Here is one of my pics from The Viewpoint:

And a nice one of Bouncing Bob who has sadly given up trail riding at age 72 but is still using his TTR on the road:

Yep - the sea took the cliff away with the road many years ago cry

Steve - it's only a trail/track nowadays. aww

When the road went all the way over Peak Hill to Sidmouth it must have been a well used tarmacadam road. hmm

We can see, along the trail now, the water board Flushing Boxes at regular intervals and the odd manhole cover.

These are the remnants of a proper highway - but its disuse after the landslip (mid 1800s) has made it into the current dead-ender. smile

The pic below is an extract from an 1825 map showing the original road. The lost section was unfenced and would have had glorious views - what a loss but, as Martyn says, it would have been a well used road and therefore not a green lane as we know it now.

You may be interested to see all our "lost" lanes leading up onto Mutters Moor to the north west.
