Not a restore but getting a TTR back on the road. Well it was already on the road as I bought it with a new MOT. The bike has done 6000 miles of which 2000 is in the last 7 years. The last year the bike has done 100 miles and is kitted out for the lanes for which I intend to use it!
As soon as I got it home oil was leaking from the decompresser plug . One of the exhaust studs was stripped, the mud flap and rear disk brake protector are missing. The plastic cover on the air box side cannot be removed as the screw is rusted and is made of cheese where it has been tried before. I do not think the engine has been serviced in a long time as you cannot get to the air filter but the oil has been changed.
Also it has a lowering link fitted which means I can just about touch the ground in road boots but not in MX boots so the seat needs shaving. Short guy on a trail bike!
The first job is to clean the mud off the thing under the mudguards and panels. Then starting from the front, work my way to the back to see what else is missing or rusted into place.
The next worry is the carb as it did have a flat spot in top gear mid-range but is probably gunked up from lack of use. But that is on the list. Might just be the exhaust not tight!
Parts order from Brian. Manuals supplied by Jarra , parts list on line by Yamaha.
I had a look at one a friend bought recently and amongst the things to check, apart from the obvious sprag clutch bang, include linkage and swing arm bearings (particularly the lower shock bearing), wheel bearings, get a torch and check that the lower part of the chain slider at the sprocket end is not worn through and is protecting the swing arm end cap, steering head bearings, air filter, gear lever is tight on its splines, engine bolts are all tight, and no cracks in the frame such as where the subframe meets the main frame.
OK First mod to do is to lower the seat so that I can touch the ground with mx boots on !
The local car trimmer said he would do it as it would make a change. He gave me back the foam which was removed and said he could put it back if I wanted the seat back to original.
