Petrol tap hard to turn
Permalink

Hello,

I have just installed the petrol tap/ petc0ck rebuild kit to find that the tap is now incredibly difficult to turn. I can just about move it with my fingers and it's easier with pliers.

Should I have used some sort of grease on the new rubber seal I installed? Or will it get a bit easier with use?

Thanks all,

Rob

Don't turn it with pliers, you'll break it most likely

Instead dismantle it and check for any burs in the casting then clean and a small amount of grease

also check that it is assembled correctly

A little bit of grease goes a long way

just as an aside, I never turn mine off unless I'm working on it and removing the tank, never had a leak in 2 years

Hope that helps

Thanks Steve. I'll take a look and see if the grease makes any difference. I had heard about not turning the tap off and might do that once I'm sure it's fixed.

It's probably dried up. Strip it down as Steve suggests you can then check the seals are intact and have not "picked up" and become damaged etc.

Sounds to me like you installed the O-ring wrong. It would not go hard or dry in that time. It is easy to do, happened to me the first time I tried and cut the O-ring. cry

I like to use rubber grease on all O-rings and rubber components and even my plastics if they start to fade, try it, for $8.00 (roughly) you can't go wrong! headbang.gifsmile

I left the tap for about a week and when I returned to fix it, it was fine. I hadn't done anything but for some reason it now turns with minimal resistance, just like the old one.
