Please help! I think I bought a lemon
Permalink

Hey guys and gals,

I'm Ian a new member.

I have just bought a 2003 TTR250 and already the speedo sender has crapped out( No problem, going to fit a electronic 1).  But today it started making a grinding/crunching noise when taking off in 1st gear.  I'm guessing it is not the clutch because taking off in 2nd works fine.  My guess is the synchro buggered. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Ian.

im thinking but no answer yet .havent struck a ttr with a gearbox problem .will see what the others come up with .

if you have modified the rear shock  flap  and its a bit wider it catches on the chain and sounds real bad .

if the rear engine mount is a bit loose it can sound bad too . had that happen once and thought i had trouble in first gear . its the bolt at the back thats hard to get at

no lemons amongst ttrs some just need a bit of attention and repay the favor in hours of great adventures smile

Thanks for the replies guys. Will check out the rear mount tomorrow but pretty sure it's a gearbox issue, will try and track down a replacement bottom end at some point.

Mine is a slightly brighter shade of yellow :)

Thanks

If your sure its mechanical and not shock flap or chain roller then an oil change would defo be a good idea before you strip your engine

good idea .with an oil change you can check for any metal in the oil .

And if you find anything major in the oil or filter its worth taking off the clutch cover and checking the guaze filter ,my old bike was making grinding noises and it turned out to be a broken finger on the clutch basket which had then been ground down and the filter and gauze were full of alloy fillings

But please dont worry im sure this is very rare and my old bike had a very hard life before i got it but its worth checking these things

Drained the oil.  The filter looks like it is full of stripper glitter  no.  Have been quoted $550AU + parts for a rebuild, thought that sounded pretty reasonable.

Thanks for all yall help,  will let yall know how it turns out.

Cheers

The WR450's and YZF450's seem to be prone to gearbox issues (3rd and 5th gear) but I have never heard or seen a broken TTR250 gearbox (apart from my old OE that decided it didn't need it's sump bolt no). If it is the gearbox, you must be the only ''lucky'' person on this forum that has a problem. It would be highly unlikely that the gearbox is buggered, but not entirely impossible I guess.

Dealers usually quote low and then the bill is twice what it originally was so look out for that.

Good luck!

I paid more than that when I did it myself. Either parts are really cheap over there, because they sold them longer, or it won't be that when it's done, like Jarrah said. My fifth gear will slip out occasionally, I find an oil change will sort it. So when fifth doesn't operate smooth like the others, time for fresh oil. I'm sure I bought a lemon. I paid 1100 for it last year, since then I have spent another £1850 on it. And now it still needs more work doing to it, the back end has completely worn out, the bearings are knackered.

I just wish I'd known last march, it's now not economically viable to sell it.

Almost got the motor out for a rebuild so don't wanna put it back togeather to try running with fresh oil. Stupid question but does the front sprocket nut loose anti clockwise??? seems to be farking tight if it does.

Thanks

Sure does loosen anti-clockwise , see here-

You should have flattened the locking washer and loosened the nut before taking the motor out. To do this, put it in first gear and loosen it with a rattle gun or a hammer and breaker bar to shock it loose. If the rear wheel spins, put the rear brake on.

It may have rust/corrosion on the shaft so some Penetrene (or WD-40) or diesel may help to free it up.

Sorted. The mechanic took it apart today and said it has broken shafts, cogs and bearing full of ali shavings. Quoted me $2500 to get it fully rebuild including new crank and pistons. Think I'm going to have to scrap it and cut my losses if I can't find a 2nd hand motor.

Happy happy joy joy

Typical of bike shops in AU, start low and work their way up until they have you by the balls. no
