Steve. Thats a nice clean looking postie. Has it been restored or just well looked after. Theres a dearlership near Brisbane that sells X postal posties 3--4 years old with low kms. Nearlly bought one before my TTR but saved the extra and got the yamaha.Had a postie in the 90s and hit a black cat with it that was close to making me fall. Same night i got 5 numbers in the lotto. That litle black cat gave me good luck Instead of bad. 5 numbers won me $1000. Maybe i should have fell after hitting the cat then i may have got 6 numbers = $1,000,000. anyway im here to ride another day and loving the TTR.
They are a really fun little bike. I just sold mine two weeks ago after having it for several years, and taking it in "hard core postie rallies" in Tasmania, Victorian alps, Camerons corner to Lake Eyre desert run.
They handle badly in sand, the suspension is hopeless on corrugations, they are fairly capable at creek crossings, and with the auto clutch it is amazing what steep hills it can be pushed up. Luggage rack is great (I had brackets on the side for supporting soft panniers). You can fit an old XR250 tank to get over 400km range and a place for your knees to go. Dunno about the crash bar as on a desert ride I saw someone get their leg trapped when they crashed on an outback road and the crash bar folded around their leg - needed help to escape.
The ex post office bikes will have had 24000km of stop-start operation, so often have badly worn rear brake drums, and hub cush drive rubber in bad condition . They also often have worn carb needles, and a standard honda needle and jet kit (sold as a package) will make them react more smoothly to small throttle changes. It is probably worth while fiddling about to get the auto clutch adjusted just right. The bikes used in Canberra had really good hand guards to keep the cold wind away - maybe they can be purchased, but others can be made to fit. They go better (and faster in top gear) with a 14T rear sprocket instead of a 15T. keep an eye on the steering head bearings.
Yours certainly looks good. They are fun and useful around town, and surprisingly capable on dirt tracks, but I would be totally scared if I had to do a long distance on an expressway riding a postie bike.
