Another Sprag Replacement

Hi All
Well I've had the starter bang going on for a while now and decided it's time to fix it before anything else gets damaged (Hopefully)

So here is the patient in the theater, all prepped and  ready for surgery001.jpg?lgfp=3000

The patient stripped down and cleaned up ready for the new bits, the gasket came off cleanly and unbroken as you can see, good, 1 less part needed

When I pulled this out things were looking hopeful

The rest of the bits and a few tools I used, lucky I had that 1 1/8th spanner, a perfect fit.
All the parts came out cleanly with no force needed, all clean with no metal filings or metal chips anywhere in evidence

The offending part, notice the 2 cracks at the top

Now all I have to do is order the new sprag from Brian

To Be Continued .....

I thought the cracks looked a little uniform !

So do I still need a new sprag ?

It seems to turn OK in 1 direction and locks in the other, but all the little teeth seem to be worn down on one side

Here's a couple of close Ups, is that worn and need replacing ?

It definitely has a bang when you turn it off.

Thanks

Steve

I find it difficult to tell how worn a sprag clutch is unless it is very obvious. From what I can see, yours looks OK but what are the faces of the "teeth" like?

If I have an engine that bangs on shut down then I just replace the sprag clutch as a matter of course as the consequences of the damage the kickback can cause are expensive!
