cutting out in water
Permalink

hi fellas

I,ve been riding my ttr for over a year now and done many water crossings. then last time out i went through a river and it cut out. started again after a few tries so I carried on and didn't think much of it.

I've been out today and every time I look at water it cuts out. the carb breathers are just trailing pipes with no one way valves so this could explain it but then again they havnt had one way valves since I have had the bike.

any help or advise will be greatly appreciated before I start my investigations.

also another problem has cropped up which makes the cutting out more frustrating.  when I press the starter switch it just clicks but if I put the bike in gear and rock it then press the switch again it starts fine. (doesn't always work first time and could be a coincidence).    I am wondering if the starter bushes could be sticking and the rock back and forth is freeing them.    again any help appreciated before I start my investigations.

cheers in advance glynn   water crossing.jpg

Hey Glynn,

I would advise to check the entire intake system for cracks or holes that may let water in. Also check that there is a little flappy guard under the seat (in between the airbox and the rear guard) to stop the water splashing up. There is two drain pipes at the bottom of the airbox that needs constant draining also, see part numbers #16 and #28 below-

Other than that I would suggest to check the insulating spark plug cap to see if it's water tight.

hi jarrah
when u say 16 an d 28 need constant draining are we talking manual draining or u mean they need to be clear so they can drain. also the snorkel on top of the airbox is missing presumably for power but as a say it never used to cut out in water. I will check under the seat but I don't remember seeing a rubber flap in the past. will the flap be attached to the seat itself?
thanks again glynn

I mean parts #16 and #28  need manual draining after every ride.

The rubber flap does not attach to the seat, it goes from the rear of the airbox to the rear fender. I tried to find a parts diagram on www.megazip/ru/bike but the website is having some trouble.  Here is a solution another member came up with- http://ttr250.activeboard.com/t56095456/water-in-air-box/

oh right ok cheers for the info it doesn't have the rubber flap either although I can easily make one out of clear pvc.
I didn't know that parts 16 and 28 needed any maintenance at all that said I clean and re oil the air filter after every ride and the airbox doesn't hold water which I presume it would if these two parts were blocked etc.
how would I go about draining them ??
cheers glynn

The drain pipes mentioned (parts #16 and #28) do not drain by themselves so there is no way they can get blocked other than the pipes getting full of dirt.

Part number #28 is the drain from the oil separator so it will have oil mixed with water in it.

To drain them simply undo the wire clamps and remove the drain pipes.

quick update !!
I've just removed the carb and the intake boot is ripped around about 2/3 of it so I guess this will be where the water is coming in
i'll update again after ive replacedthe boot and tested it

Yea maybe!!
Come to think of it when I was up in 5th and 6th at weekend it was struggling a bit and I had to change down to build up some revs and get it going again. I thought it was due to the gale force wind on the day but maybe it was down to the split boot
Hmmmm!!!
I'm sure I've seen another post on here where someone was having to gear down to get in the power and stop it bogging.
Maybe the same issue
