Ignition problem with 94 Raid

Hi, I wonder if anyone could help. I purchased a 1994 TTR Raid as a non runner, I cleaned the carbs as per Brian's brilliant sticky and the bike now runs great HOWEVER  it will not switch off using the ignition switch and I have to use the kill switch to stop the engine ( I think I have read somewhere that you should not use the kill switch on a regular basis to stop the engine?)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Makes no sense to me unless a previous owner has tampered with the wiring.

Do the head and tail lights and neutral light go out when the ignition is turned off?

Hi Brian, yes the lights and the neutral indicator go on and off with the ignition switch. The previous owner may have messed with the wiring as I have seen a few rogue connectors. Is it a problem to use the kill switch to stop the engine?

If you use the kill switch to stop the engine then it's best if you switch the ignition off also instead of leaving it live. wink

Forget to switch the ignition off and the circuit is still draining the battery and will flatten it, the coil would also be taking charge and possibly heating up. disbelief

The only problem that I can see with using the kill switch is that it may fail due to prolonged use. However, not using switches tends to corrode them also. Another good point is that kill switches are cheaper than ignition switches. wink The other thing is what Martyn mentioned- leaving the ignition on.

You can also use the side stand switch to kill the engine if it is fitted and working correctly by lowering the stand.

Thanks guys. I was a bit worried that using the kill switch might damage the ignition black box but if that is not the case then I will use the kill switch but make sure I switch the ignition off. I am also going to investigate the wiring for signs of interference!

It is up to you but I would prefer to have the ignition turn off with the ignition switch. It makes more sense to me. wink
