Welcome to the forum, Jock.

Tyre suitability is a big can of worms. It basically depends entirely on what type of surface you mainly use.

Tarmac requires a smooth treaded dual purpose tyre, loose stones and flint require a deeper treaded tyre with stiffer side walls, mud and loose stoned lanes require a stiff/supple sidewall and wide tread, sandy trails require less pressured tyres to spread the load. etc - etc  confuseconfuse

I don't think one combination of tyres will please all people and all lanes. no

In East Devon with muddy/dusty lanes the consensus favours Pirelli  MT43 rear and Michelin CompV front. South Devon riders prefer more motocross type tyres for their stonier/steeper lanes.

I would advise that you look and see what riders in your area use and ask them how they like their choice, perhaps have a ride on them and then make your choice,

The Dunlop dual sport D603 & D605 work well if your not playing in the mud & both are pretty good on the tar, if you need a more serious tyre the D606 is good for the true off road riding.

I have used all of the above on my TTR, another tyre is the Bridgestone Trailwing I think it's the TW302, much like the Dunlop 603 & 605 but will get more miles that the Dunlop

I used the Heidenau K60s as my road going tyres and love them. Great wear rates too, not too noisy and nice and smooth cruising at 70mph.

Size wise I kit a 4.00 18 K60 on the rear.

It is with deepest regret that I Inform you of the sad passing of the Mitas 644 Army Tire nononono
they have stopped making them in 18 inch there is still stocks of the 17 inch rear an 21 fronts left but when they are gone that's it. this tire has been around as long as I can remember and will handle anything and last for 5000 road miles anyone know anything that comes close to this as the Mitas replacement tire is not looking good

Hi Moo ,
I have read the reviews about the Heidenau types and they seem just what I need. Do I just ask for a 4.00 18 k60 type and that will fit the back of my TTR 250 bike. Is there anywhere that you might recommend buying one from seen them on the internet and there about £75 which is fine then I need to find somewhere to fit it. The other problem I have is I think I picked up a puncture last night so I presume I need a new inner tube do you know what size to order then I can get back on the road.

While we're on tyres, I came across the Heidenau K79 on the MyTyres web site at a reasonable price.

Looks along the same lines as the Michelin Comp IV but not quite as knobbly. Anyone ever tried one...?

Some posts I read a while back on tyres recommended the Mitas C02 rear with Michelin comp IV front, but I was never sure if that was for pure off road or whether that works where you have to cover a fair bit of tarmac to get a to a trail (Byway in UK). This is a reasonably cheap combo though, so that may be a factor in choice too.

Down in Surrey/Hants/North downs, I usually have to do ~5-10 miles-ish of tarmac for every 1 mile of trail I reckon, give or take, and so anything too knobbly is going to get worn pretty quickly. I think I'm leaning towards the Pirelli MT21, perhaps slightly more knobbly than the Bridgestone Trailwing 301/302 that I;ve had since I bought the bike, but still recommended on tarmac. A bit more expensive but still way cheaper than a pair of 120/70-17, 180/55-17 road tyres! :)

Not knobbly enough for me! I would stick to my Heidenaus for mixed road and dry/hard trail, and Maxxis IT for UK green lanes.

Hi 

i have tried a lot of tires and have settled for Dunlop D606 more dirt orientated, the D605 is a 50-50 dirt /road tends to be a bit loose on dirt
