Oponeo seems usually the cheapest for tyres but the Mitas CO2 is £61 and the Michelin Comp 4 is £58, coming to £119.

Does anyone know of somewhere else i should look?

I have noticed that quite alot of the talk has been about actual tyre brands so this may or may not be usefull.

Because there is so many choices available today it makes it hard to choose between brands of tires . I don't claim to have used all tires & this would be nearly impossible to do.

What i can say is that it is more important to be using the correct compound for the conditions that you ride.

The pic below shows the scale..

As you can see from above i use medium compound tires.

The difference.

A hard compound tire is more for bitumen roads that does not see alot of rain as these can be ''slippery when wet'' These would also be not very good grip for offroading as the knobbeys won't be gripping into the dirt so well. On the good side of things your tread lasts longer.

A medium compound tire is more for offroad/onroad riding. It will still have the grip needed offroad but still hard enough to cope with tarmac roads. Makes a little more noise than hard compound but much better ride.

The soft compound on the other hand is mainly for offroad as it is not hard enough to cope with tarmac & the knobbeys come off quite easily if ridden on tarmac or hard surfaces. The good point being that you have plenty of grip for offroad riding.

So it all depends what your preference of brand/price/ personal experience is as to what tyre you like best.

I personally use Dunlop Maxxis cross it as they ''seem'' to last a little longer but anything in medium compound seems to suit fine for my style of riding & conditions.

 +1 - an excellent combination except that it's also useful for me to have a spare rear wheel shod with an MT43 for visits to the rocky and slatey lanes of North or South Devon

I can't give a reccomendation on cheap tyres as i only buy good (enough) quality tyres so they last However,you could check out these sites & see how cheap & nasty they come. They have good brands available too.

I agree with you, Mitas ARE slippery on tarmac but very good on the sludge and mud.

In Devon we have two camps:-

• Camp A where there's lots of slime, mud and little rocks prefer Mitas
• Camp B where there are lots of flint, rocks and a bit of sludge and water prefer Pirelli - MT43

Front tyres are a personal preference.

My TTR has Pirelli MT43 rear and Michelin Enduro Competition IV front.

This combination performs well on wet or dry tarmac too.

Mitas tend to wear out quickly on tarmac because they have a soft compound, whereas Pirelli are harder and last longer.

A few Devon riders are trying out Trelleborg and are pleased with them, but haven't formed an overall preference.

I started a new job last week and the TTR will be pressed into service as a commuter for my 25km each way road ride. The TTR was originally put on the road just for trail riding, so I had a new full knobby fitted to the rear rim to match the knobby front that was on the bike when I bought it.

The max speed limit I'll be riding through is 80 km/h. Have any of you good folk fitted road tyres to the original rims? My TTR is a Japanese market Raid, a 1994 model. The knobby tyres are awful through bends and roundabouts, even in the dry. Diabolical in the wet! Hard braking is out of the question!!

What have you Guys and Gals fitted for road use? A second set of rims/tyres would be ideal but cost would rue that out unfortunately

I was going to sell/trade the TTR but with the exception of an annoying oil leak on the oil filter side between the crankcase and the right side engine cover. I figure with a decent set of tyres and the gasket replaced the old TTR would make a fine short distance commuter. All the new bikes I can afford are only 150cc and tiny!

I would be looking at either
Shinko 705 or Kenda 761
both are ADV tyres aimed at
80% seal / 20% gravel , hard dirt etc..

I understand your ,ours, problem.
will post pictures of my tires and the option tires for original rims that probably will be my next changes.
As a newbee, choose de offroad tires was a doubt option, but I like it. Besides I ride allmost onroad, few concerns about this tires.
of course in wet are instable and instopable... but very good in japanese roads.

Is it possible to change the off road wheels for road ones and if so which ones fit. I am thinking better road riding and handling if I am not between green lanes

Just a quick one. Does anyone know what other wheels will fit straight onto the TTR. Mine is an open endure model.

I would like another set of wheels with road biased tyres on them as mine has road legal endure tyres at the mo.

What tyres would you use ??
