G'day everyone. Does anyone have experience in repainting the plastics ie tank/side covers etc? I was told by a local dealer that you can't repaint the tank because of the type of plastic from which it is made. Is this correct?
The plastics should not be painted because it will flake off easy and get scratched before you know it. The heat also makes the fuel seeps through the plastic fuel tank so it's hard to keep paint on it. If you want to paint the plastics, I would suggest to use a high quality oil/fuel resistant plastic primer before a fuel resistant top coat is applied . You may achieve okay~acceptable results this way but in time it will need doing again.
However, there does seem to be a solution - 2-pack paint.
I had an open Enduro about 3 years ago and the panels were absolutely gleaming white - better than new! The guy I bought it from had bought it like that so couldn't tell me what process had been used but knowledgeable friends said it was a 2-pack finish.
I sold it on to a "beginner" mate who used it for laning and it took many a tumble but the panels stayed good with no cracking or flaking so it may be worth considering?
I wish now I had taken some close up pics of the panels
Thanks for the responses fella's, maybe I'll try painting the 2 side panels in 2 pack and see what happens. They're pretty messed up anyway so can't hurt giving it a try.
