Sorry to hijack this topic, just didn't want to start yet another thread for a gearing Question.
I'd like to gear my 250 for riding gravel tracks and Tarmac roads. I am looking at riding over to northern Spain for a week next year to ride some trails, but there is a fair amount of black stuff to cover too, plus the weight of a weekend sized tail pack. Not looking to cruise at on motorways, but sitting comfortably at 65-70 would be nice.
Even my lane riding here is kept to the easy stuff, if I can help it, as I usually ride on my own, so no real need to hoist the front over logs or go crazy up the steepies. :)
Any suggestions?

TTROOKIES. Three Blokes. Three TTRs. All the gear and no idea.
I mention this as a couple of my mates are going exploring in the summer, they have a Mito 125 and an NSR 125 respectfully, the thing is I can easily leave them for dead pulling away from them but the bike starts to run out of puff at about 55ish, I guess, the digital speedo is reading wrong and I don't know how far out it is.
The trip will be a fully tarmac trip, due to the nature of their bikes. I'm currently running 14/52, which I adore. I had 13/52 before but it made it impossible on the tarmac for any length of time and it was very easy to fluff up pulling away and send the wheel skyward, the police have told me off a few times for it. realistically, I am looking for a 60-65 mph cruising speed, at the moment, I cruise at 110KMH, according to the speedo, but I don't I don't know what the genuine speed is, I can get the speedo to read 136km/h on a flat and no more, maybe more but I get a bit skittish at that speed and lose the nerve.
Sorry for rambling, I always do it, will 14/48 give me a reasonable cruising speed without losing too much bottom end and acceleration, mostly we willuse back roads, but when the time starts to get tight, we'll use dual carriageways. I would like to cruise faster as they can both comfortably cruise at 70, if required, which I don't want to due to the wind but, maybe a bit faster without straining the old girl too much.
Thanks,
Adam

This is a good combination for higher speeds on tarmac, while still being useable off-road. Can't say what the top speed was (as my old OE did not have a speedo) but it seemed quite good, the best for high speed/fuel economy and not revving the sh#t out of the engine at high speed in fact.
If you go any lower than 47~46 rear, the engine will not have the torque required to reach a maximum top speed. It will also lower the ''pull'' in lower gears substantially.
My favourite combinations for high speed riding on tarmac or similar are- 14/48, 14/47, 13/47, 13/48.
My favourite combo's for low speed trail riding with a bit of high speed riding thrown in are- 14/51, 13/51, 14/50 and 14/51.

That's what I wanted to hear, I just bought a second set of wheels for the TTR, I am going to stick some Pirelli MT90 tyres on that set, get a second chain and sprocket set for that set and then that'll be me for the summer, I don't like riding trails in the summer really, I prefer the tar during the warmer months, and if I do venture offroad, usually it's dryer so don't need so much low end anyway.
