As you can see they are nice and clean for now. Wondering why the sponge is there. 

Maybe for sound deading Or protection of the panel itself.  I guess if the sponge does 

absorbe water on creek crossing it would soon vibrate off.

They absorb the echo of a pulsing, throbbing 4 stroke 250cc chugging along.

Also absorb grit, water, moisture, smells and other obnoxious stuff.

After a few years of use they deteriorate and look a bit tattered but who knows (or cares) what they're really for?

Enjoy them whilst you've got them.

That is the padding for the airbox so it doesn't rub from vibration. The other side has aluminum foil for the exhaust.
