Hi All

Firstly, although this isn't a ttr related problem, I'm hoping an electrical wizard will be able to help me figure out where I am going wrong!

My DR350 got stolen a few weeks back. By some miracle the police managed to recover it after seeing some kids wheeling it about outside a travellers site.

Anyway, its been ripped up a little bit as they pulled the battery out and all the indicators and associated ignition wiring out :(

Anyway, I've bought most of the bits I think I need to fix it, but I'm a total newbie when it comes to bike electrics, so please bear with me.

I have a new battery on, live is connected and the negative is also now connected. Neg cable was earthed to the chassis, but they had ripped out the negative cable that feeds into the rest of the electrics - I have soldered a new wire in and with a volt meter continuity test, I am getting a reading at other points now (eg negative cable for the indicators)

What I am having problems with, is getting the bike to start, or even show any signs of life. I purchased a new universal ignition barrel, but before fitting it I wanted to make sure everything else was working.

There was a universal barrel fitted before, along with an aftermarket speedo as this bike was a converted off road bike.

Currently I have this

So I have the red wire (which again I did a continuity test from the red battery cable to the end pictured here and am getting a reading) a brown and orange wire (currently cripmed together) a grey and a black with white tracer wire.

I have the wiring diagram also :

So, from my understanding of the diagram, if I connect the red and orange wires together, and the grey and brown wire together, that would give me the same as turning the ignition switch to the "on" position? However, nothing seems to happen. No lights, no horn working, and indeed nothing happens when I press the starter button.

Am I doing a massive oversight on something?

Thanks all

Mike

Here is a starting point...

The Black wire with the White strip joins to the Black wire with the Yellow stripe. This usually joins through the main switch. These two wires MUST NOT touch the red, brown or grey wire(s).

The Red wire needs to run through the main switch to turn the electrics OFF/ON. After it goes through this switch it joins to the Grey wire, Orange wire, and Brown wire.

Do that, post back the results and I will see if I can help further if need be.

ps. can you please resize your wiring diagram so it fits or delete it please. It makes it hard having to scroll across to see anything.

Thanks for the quick reply Jarrah

Sorry, didnt relise the pic was so big - looked ok on my 30" lol. Have resized it to a more friendly size now :)

I'll give that a try when I get in. Just wondered, should the thing fire up if I don't use the new igntion barrel? Ie. Should it fire up if I connect those 4 coloured wires together (along with connecting the black/white and black/yellow wire)?

 No problems mkc2bad thumbsup.gif

Assuming that all other connections are okay- YES it will fire. The lights etc will not turn off without a switch though. Just use a kill switch or 12-V switch and run the Red wire to the power feed side of the switch and Grey, Brown, Orange to the other side of the switch. This is so you can turn the lights etc. off so you don't flatten your battery.

Report back so I know how you go.

Jarrah

Bad news, it didn't work :(

I connected the black/white to the black/yellow. I then connected the 4 colours together, but nothing works still. No horn/lights etc. I'm guessing that there must be a problem elsewhere? Shame, I was hoping this was going to be easy to sort out

just going off the switch connections indicated by the wiring diagram..

It will never start unless black/white is NOT connected to black/yellow (as that is the "off" state which kills the ignition).
so disconnect these again.

now if red is connected to orange and grey to brown then that should simulate the ignition switch being on.
with these 2 connections (and no more) it should then start and (eg) the horn should work.

if not, there are other problems lurking somewhere.

Ahr, yes I must have overlooked that not that it would have done damage, it just wouldn't fire.

On the other hand, if it did not at least have lights when you connected those wires you have a problem elsewhere.

Tried that, but still nothing :( obviously something has been damaged elsewhere. Thanks for all the input, I'm going to get someone to come out and fix the ignition, once that's working I'm sure I can I the other little bits myself

Cheers

Just wanted to update - I had an auto electrican come out yesterday..... and the cause of no power.... flat battery! I only just put a new one on it, but somehow it's discharged itself in a week! Felt like a right idiot! Anyway, all the electrics now work. unfortunately the bike wouldn't start. After much cranking, looks like the engine isn't getting any fuel. Pulled the spark plug and it is dry as a bone! It is definitely sparking nice and bright. Not sure if the carb is getting any fuel. Perhaps needs purging first to suck the fuel through? Anyway, I'm going to pull the carb out and have a look.

cheers
Mike

might be worth fitting a small clear in-line filter between the tap and carb, obviously its good for filtering any crap that may be in the tank,
It also work as a good visual way to check if there should be fuel flowing,
hope this helps.
