My 2004 ttr has developed a rattle. Its actually more of a jingle that happens when the engine is not under load. I wondered if it could be the clutch plates having worn tabs but any thoughts would be welcome before dismantling anything.

This sounds a lot like cam chain rattle.
If fixing the clutch does not fix it I would suggest to check cam chain, guides, sprockets, tensioner. Replace anything that has too much wear and also check the guides for cracks.
You can use a piece of garden hose as a mechanic's stethoscope by holding one end to your ear and the other to where you think the noise is coming from.
