Brett, there's not really a lot any motorcyclist can do to safeguard his bike when he leaves it in any public place.

If the thief wants it - he will take it, alarms, chains, locks and all.

This article - CLICKY - is what Dirt Bike has to say.

They start by saying that you ensure the bike is INSURED, and end up by saying,

"Most of these dirt bike security tips are about using your common sense. The less people that know about your toys, the better. Don't make it easy for these crims to steal your bike."

Not a lot of use, I know, but there is no sure-fire way of safeguarding your treasure.

Well, I think your options are limited by the depth of your pocket.

If I really wanted a low cost deterrent then I'd plump for a disk lock that had a LOUD siren incorporated.

eBay has got quite a few on offer as does Amazon - some better than others - but I still say, if a thief wants your bike he'll take it.

A disk lock, chain, anchor, steering lock, etc. is only going to deter an opportunist thief.

 No way to stop anyone from taking a LIGHT bike that can be picked up by one person and thrown on a truck in seconds.
I don't use my TTR for street riding, but have a 715 pound Harley I worry about someone getting sometimes. It would seem to be too heavy to lift, but 2 strong men can even pick a bike up, if they do this for a living.
 

I have been known to carry a small lock for one of the rotor holes. It's small enough to fit in a pocket or lock to a part on the bike easy enough. While this will only keep kids or spur of the moment crimes, that is gonna be where these people start.

For me it's to leave the bike somewhere near people, and with the TTR being a light bike, I carry a short say 1/5 m chain & lock and lock it to something heavy or awkward.

Yrs ago we used to go to race meetings, often parts from bikes were missing on return - so I used to spray old oil on my bike and ride around in the dirt, this way my bike looked a heap and others would be more attractive.

The only time I had a bike nicked was chatting to a guy we part knew, about when I went to college etc - sure enough it was gone when I came out of college. I got the bike back but It taught me to be more careful. Again years later, we had a biker re-union and this guy came along, shocked at seeing me he left like a lost sole with no chance of bike friendship in our group - better revenge than what I had planned out for him.

At home I put up some gates with wire on to keep my son in as a small lad- people used to think we had a dog, so I put up a beware of dog sign - that worked (now we have two dogs, even better).

For me it's a case of think it out, I don't use my pickup for carrying my trail bike as I see it as a risk to leave it in a layby all day, so I ride it there and accept I wear trail tyres more.
