Hi

Today I rode for about 15miles and the bike spluttered as though the fuel was running out and I needed to switch to reserve, I did this which seemed to solve the "issue' however the bike died about a quarter of a mile later. I then had to push it for a few mins as it would not re start. After trying again to start it, leaving it for a few minutes it started again and I managed to ride it half a mile to a petrol station, with it getting progressively lumpier, where it died again. I filled the tank up and it took about 6 litres (3 short of the max). I brimmed it the previous time so this is about a litre short of where reserve should be needed anyway. The bike was on its way to get the sub frame repaired and they came out in a van to collect it, once out of the van it started first time and could be ridden up and down the road with no issue.

The last owner had to clean the carb before I collected it as his wife had run it out of fuel and the 400km I have done since have been trouble free until today.

Could this be anything to do with a lack of air getting into the tank and creating a vacuum? I wonder this as it was a warm day today, I'd been at high revs on a dual carriageway (approx 14km) and there appears to be no obvious way for the tank to breath as a locking cap (with no obvious 'holes') is fitted and not one with a tube in it as I've seen elsewhere on ttr's.

That's a classic example of tank vacuum, Scotty. blankstare

To test if this diagnosis is right, next time just remove the cap (or loosen it) to let air in and see if it cures. wink

Otherwise it's bound to be sh1t in the petrol/carb which would need clearing out to cure.

Hi

Does your bike have a locking cap or one with a breather tube? I'm erring on the side of vacuum and was thinking of changing the cap; does the totally ttr shop sell them or is there another source?

Thanks for the reply smile

Are yes. I had the same problem on a Honda I had, the cap was not venting properly, tried cleaning the cap but ended up changing it, and didn't have any more problems. Also I cleaned the carb, to make sure that wasn't the fault, good luck, hope you get it sorted for weekend.

The 99-13 fuel tank cap does not fit the older 93-98 fuel tank.

It breaths around the top of the cap as the rubber that seals it does not come in contact with the top of the fuel cap. Rather it sits against the fuel cap with a small gap between the sealing surface and the top of the fuel cap. It breaths through a tiny hole that has a white filter in the other side of the hole. It also has a brass tang directly oppisite of the tiny hole with the filter.

Simon has already covered this topic HERE.

As I have my bike back I have looked at the cap and of corse it doesn't look like the one in the pic! I useda high ppressure air line on it and any orifice got a good shot of air ( ohh Mrs...) Didn't play up on the ride back but would like to pick up a new one; can this be done for a metal tank ttr, I couldn't see anyon totaly tttr?
