Engine noise?

Hello all, I have got my bike jetted in and it runs great, but I can't help but to think of this tick. There is a slight tick audable from the motor at high RPM's, is this normal or should my valves be adjusted? I would make a video but i lost my transfer cord and i don't think the recorder would pick up the noise.

Depending on how loud this ''tick'' is it could be a number of things.

Valve re-shim?

Cam chain rattle?

Well it's not a tick, yet it's not quite a clunck. It's hard to describe. If I think of anything to compare it to i'll post haha

If you are this could be your ''engine noise''.

Do you feel a splutter or hesitation at high revs?

Does it pop in the carb on deceleration?

Does it take awhile until the engine reaches full peak?

Do you hear a ''pinging'' noise at high revs (usually accompanied by hitting the rev limiter too easy)?

If so your running rich.

After reading this I decided it may be misleading, so I have decided to re-write it.

If you can borrow someone phone or vid cam make a vid.

On the jetting subject (I know it's annoying to have to take the carb off and apart but)- now that you have found the ''correct'' main jet size, try dropping your edit: needle clip position down until it starts to splutter in high revs. Once a splutter or hesitation (usually accompanied by popping in the carb) is noticed raise the jet needle clip position two settings. This should be the best set-up for fuel economy and performance.

This may even fix your ''engine noise'' as it could be running too rich or lean.

I did say that Mikuni jets are in thoery ten sizes larger so maybe closer to #130 (as previously mentioned) would have been better.

That said, you can't be too far out if it's not spluttering bad.

In the middle clip position, while rolling the throttle off slowly, once in a while you may hear the subtlest hickup from the bike, it was so subtle that you would have to roll the throttle off very slowly and listen very carefully. I have just dropped my needle clip position (i know what you meant, no need to edit haha). I didn't ride the bike much, just putted around the yard a little bit because it's getting dark. So far, no sputtering. matter of fact, it felt like it had more power :s . Will give an update tomorrow.

Good news

It could be that you are running lean than. It will make practically the same ''pinging'' sound but the bike may overheat at constant high speed.

It's not a ping, it's more like a knock but it's not very noticable. I'm just hoping I don't need new crank bearings or other bearings. I don't think the bike is lean because it doesn't seem to run hot and the pipe never glows red.
