Hi everyone,

I've just bought my first TTR, a 93 white open enduro. First impressions are great, but after 5 miles the digital speedo  stopped working and just reads 0 even on the M4! The starter button also seems a bit hit & miss, at the petrol station it gave no response on the first 3 prods, then burst into life on the 4th push? Any ideas/help would be much appreciated! I'm used to bigger bikes, but I can already see why the TTR has a bit of a cult following.

Cheers  Mud

Welcome to TTR land, Mud.

The white OE speedo is a magnetic pick up from the gearbox sprocket and is prone to malfunction. cry

Some owners have resorted to refixing the magnets in sender, but repairs can be iffy. confuse

The starter button malfunction can be a few things. First off is to dismantle and clean out the button on the handlebars. Clean the contacts and spread copiously with Vaseline. (Ooo err missus) biggrin

If that doesn't cure it then check the fail-safe switches on the clutch, gear position sensor and the side stand switches. These are all designed as safety switches that prevent novices starting the bike in gear or with the stand down. Trouble is they get damp and filled with dust and mud. blankstare

Have a read of the TTR250 FAQ web pages link at the top left of this page - plenty of info for the newbies. aww

Hi Mud and welcome to the forum!

The usual cause of the digital speedo stopping is either the sender magnet (sits in a housing over the front sprocket) breaking up or the sender unit (sits in with the magnet) failing from moisture ingression. Simple enough to make a visual check of the magnet after removing the cover.

The starter problem is more difficult. If you are sure that its the button and not a bad connection or sticky solenoid then you may be able to strip the switch apart and clean the contacts.

Let us know how you get on!

The TTR250 has classic trail bike status for good reason. Low maintenance, the e-start and the simplicity of the air-cooled engine are the big pluses wink
