hi,have just bought a ttr250 today after finally deciding my mz660 is starting to look a  bit sorry for it's self after using it on the trails, that and the fact it weighs a ton when i have to pick it up too.

one small question of many i expect,is it normal for the tank to rust where it meets the side panels?

have just removed the a of black gunk/sticky stuff and have found what appears to be a lead/solder fillet i think, as it's quite easy to file and sand to shape.have left it in shed with petrol in to see if it leaks.

Hi and welcome, Roger.

It is quite common that rust is present on the steel tanked TTR, round about the place where the seat rubs.

As long as it's patched properly and doesn't leak it ought be OK.

BUT Don't sit on the bike and smoke at the same time though! no

It is mentioned in the FAQ web pages - "what to look out for."

On metal-tanked bikes, check that the bottom corners of the tank aren't too rusted where they rub against the seat. This wears the paint off and allows moisture to sit against the tank and rust it away.

Yup, the Bowd is still there:-

It's now a bit different from your "years ago".

I don't think they have camping in the back garden now, but I'm prepared to be wrong.
