Adrian I take it that you've removed the handlebars and top yoke and the fork legs are held in the bottom yoke which is attached to the steering head. confuse

The steering stem will be seen at the top of the steering head. The stem is held in place by two nuts a washer and a tab washer - Nos 5, 6 and 7 below.

Undo the nuts and take off the washer and ball race cover.

The stem, with attached forks and bottom yolk, should now be removable and drop through the steering head. wink

yes martyn have done all that you mentioned, and the bottom yolk won't budge no.  Have sprayed it with penetration oil and will go at it again tomorrow with a larger hammer biggrin and block of wood, unless you can suggest another option ??

Obviously the stem is stuck in the bearing inner race - rust and mud more than likely. confuse

Liberal dosing of penetrating oil, WD40, diesel, paraffin, etc. ought to persuade it.

Oh - and a 5lb lump hammer with block of wood to protect the threads. dohsmile

Keep the bike well supported off the deck, you don't want it falling over on-top of you.

Good luck

Finally got them separated. Killed 1 soft hammer, and the head only glanced off my frame holding mate lol. Top bearing was full of nice grease, but nothing but crud and rust around the bottom bearing. So will be doing the grease nipple mod. Today's task, remove bearings and look for some grease nipples, drill bit and thread tap.

Well done Adrian - more progress!

Where do you reckon the water/crud came in - from above or below?

Regarding the grease nipple trick, make sure your rubber bung at the top of the yoke is in (yep - been there and made a right mess until I realised where the grease was going!) and you don't push it out with the pressure.
