Baja Designs headlamp unit

Took the plunge and ordered a Baja Designs glass headlamp unit from California in a desperate attempt to light up my night. They do have some fantastic rally lamps and led products to drool over www.bajadesigns.com  My '93 OE was fitted with a UFO headlight with plastic lens and 35w glowworm, which I like the shape of, but found downright dangerous in traffic on unlit roads. The new lamp fits the UFO outer shell with little modification, but relies on the 2 side mount bolts for angle - might need to put in some packing when I've found the optimum position. (Note I have modded the bracket to lift the whole unit up and forward to allow for storage behind and below - tools, 1st aid kit, levers etc)

Here's the lamp "naked"

DOT marked clear glass lens with a patterned reflector (which I think could do with being a bit more polished, but we'll see how it goes...) of plastic. Baja Designs use this for one of their HID rally lamp conversions so I imagine they're confident it won't melt!

Lens Size 5 1/4" by 3 5/8"

Here's the result: 1st 2 are the UFO 35w, 2nd 2 are the BD lamp with a 55/60w H4 bulb.

I've not yet adjusted the beam, this is just how it came out. Obviously significantly brighter, and mainbeam is a better long distance pencil beam. We'll see how it works in the real world, but I'm happy so far!

Now just got to get a load of mates bikes to the same spot in the field and photo the spread for further comparison, especially bro's XL600, which is a bigger rectangular lamp, but a lovely beam...

Well, a day 'laning in mid Wales ended with about 3 hours riding home in the dark and the new lamp is "Awesome". The photo's don't do justice to how much better it is - bright and a good spread of light. As good, if not better than the 7" rectangular lamp on bro's xl600 (once I adjusted the beam angle a bit) and makes the old original OE of mate Giles seem like a candle! Very happy with the result. Would be nice to put it alongside a y2k blue model for further comparison as I think it'll fit in the orifice.
Next stage is to put a pair of relays in to up the voltage at the bulb to 13 from the lowly 10.8 that manages to squeeze past the handlebar switch, which will make it brighter still, and also protect the switch from overheating...

Hi Brian,

No, never even seen a blue model round here let alone had a chance of measuring one! The lens dimensions are in the post between the photos somewhere though so you can check your orifice...biggrin

Blimey - that was a long time ago! I tried the light unit in a blue headlight surround and it was a perfect fit - bolted straight in.

Simon - did you have to make a modification to fit the H4 bulb because my email thread indicated it wasn't a straight fit?

Yes, it took me a while to find it!
I made up a loom with 2 relays and an on/off switch as I wanted full voltage and the ability to turn it all off to stop current draw in emergencies. I suppose a simple adaptor could be made up to go from the obscure OE shape plug to the universally standard H4. As I wanted to use a 55/60W bulb I thought the standard wiring might not be adequate, and when I measured the voltage output from the switch (10.8!!!) I was right. It was by far the most efficient (if most time consuming) option.
