Heavy clutch - Standard clutch springs wanted!

If you have the Blue plastic tank model like i'm thinking you do .......
Purchase this Yamaha 90501-23391-00 SPRING,COMPRESSION
This Yamaha 90501-23391-00 SPRING,COMPRESSION is also used on these models and components:
That should give you a better chance of finding some.
.....................................................................................
The older metal tank bikes apparently are different & have different part numbers.

Okay well if you get into trouble i would be happy to send you my old set as a gift free of charge. It was from my old 1994 OE & they were still in spec (as far as i can remember),still worked good none the less.

Also the blue *tank model * springs are only about a mm or two shorter so you can put extra high tensile washers to take up the diffence if you have to.

I had a good  look at the ones i have (only four turned up so far) & it seems that they have two washers fitted to them. Does yours have two washers & a washer based bolt fitted or just the washer based bolt?

I got a feeling these might be the blue springs with two washers fitted to compensate but can't say for sure.

The extra washers were on the the bike when i bought it & it had a new clutch fitted just before i bought it so i was guessing that's how it was from factory. The washers fitted are'nt just ordinary washers either. They have a flash copper ''colour'' finish to the outside of them & look factory.I'm doubting this now though. A bike shop fitted the clutch,i know that much. Had no trouble with the clutch on it either.

If you just use high tensile washers with the blue tank springs it would work though.

Finally had the engine sealed up today and got to fitting the clutch cable. and check the clutch.

Holy Cow but it is stiff / heavy compared to my kxf250 and crf250x.  The clutch has been changed at some point as the nuts had a few marks on them and the basket has very little wear.I am thinking someone has fitted a heavy duty set.

The clutch cable itself is good. I even tried using it straight over the frame - so no cable routing just direct and its still bad.

I took the clutch cover off again now ( why didnt they design that cover with an inspection panel like other bikes!) and released 3 of the spings, much better but after a rumage round the garage I dont have any springs that would fit.

I can find EBC CSK springs but they are heavy duty again, so where is the best place to get standard springs?

Hi Jarrah,

Its an 93 OE, so the old 6 plate with longer springs.

Hi Brian,

I double checked that today after reading another members thread that you posted it in, thats why I opened up the cover again. Its a little trickey to see the markings while bent over the bike as the shock gets in the way but I think I have it in the correct place or near abouts.

Just to see what the difference was I turned out the adjuster a couple of turns, the lever goes passed the marking - although easier to pull, the plates barely seperate.

Going the other way, turning it in a couple more and have the lever just in front of the case markings it seperates the plates very quickly but is stiff again to pull the lever.

If the sun is out tomorrow again I will have the bike outside and turn it round so I get a better angle at the marking though.

Well done Ian handshake.gif

If you get stuck on the standard springs then I can probably sort out a set of good s/h for you. My supplier is out of stock of genuine new ones no

Thanks Jarrah,
Sounds like the washers were added to compensate for the shorter springs. The Blue bikes have 1 less plate in the basket so a good few mm's to take out of the spring.

I need to get a new front sproket as well so I will take Brian up on his offer and add a sproket to my order :)

cheers all

Ian

Had a good look over it today again. I am confident it is all assembled and adjusted correctly so I will go with some second hand standard springs and prob go 2 heavy duty /3 standard springs.

Brian I have sent over an email for some bits for next week.

Ian

Just to complete this thread, I fitted 3 standard springs and 2 heavy duty ones. Clutch feels good now.

Will have to get some miles on it to see if it starts slipping in the mud when the oil is hot.
