I just got my ttr 250, don't know tons, but I am a bit savvy to mechanics. So I picked up Penzoil Outdoor (For smaller engines) motercycle engine oil. 20W-50. 

Is this type of oil recommended?

Will it "Work"?

Basically, Jakob, most oils will work - but some are better than others. smile

If you take a look at this item in the FAQ pages - CLICKY THINGY - you can read what Mr Yamaha recommends.

Out and out car oils are really not suitable for bikes because car oils have "slippery" additives. Bikes' clutches usually run in the engine oil and don't like the additives.

A good dollop of Motul 5100 Semisynthetic Ester oil is given to my TTR. biggrin

Canada, where you are, can be chilly in places at certain times so I'd recommend you check the Yamaha spec. and also check what other bikers are using.

We have used Mobil 4 T 10W/40 synthetic motorcycle oil, changed every 3000km. It seems to give excellent results, we ride in high ambient temperatures up to +38degC and the engines never overheat, cook spark plugs or fry the exhaust. Cubber is dead right about not using car engine oil, I have first hand experience of an old Honda 4- piston damage and a slipping clutch.

Not sure about your 20/50 grade though, especially in a cool/cold climate.  It's a long climb from the TTr's oil pump to the cam bearings and a 20/50 grade is not the fastest moving oil if it's really cold.  I'd prefer a 10/40 and give the cam bearings a happier start to the day.

Yeah, looking outside right now we are getting at least 0 degree weather (thats in Celsius for all you yanks), I think I will try and pick up somehting else. Already it can be a pain to start, but It always starts eventually. I ordered a new oil filter to change with it, a Hiflow, hoping that is a good buy, I have heard they are alright. 

Also, I have no idea what the previous owner used for oil, Should I use semi-synthetic or...?

You should be using SAE 10W 30. If the temp goes over 20 C* you can use SAE 10W 40.

I personally prefer a mineral based oil SAE 10W 30 as it is the most efficient for my area. Some use synthetic but MR Yamaha likes to use mineral oil also wink
