i am trying to time up my ttr after fitting new exhaust valves, i am not sure which mark on the flywheel is tdc, there are 2 marks, one is a single line and the other a double line, the workshop manual i have says turn the engine clockwise until you see the mark, do they mean clockwise if you are looking at the left side of the engine or clockwise when looking at the right hand side??

i have timed it up so that the single mark is inline and the cam are in the correct position. it turns over, the valve clearances are ok but it does not run.

There is a good pic of the correct timing mark in this sequence - http://www.ttr250.com/Removing_Cylinder_Head/TTR_head_removal.htm

Once that's OK, check you have good compression. A simple initial test is to have the plug out and see if you can keep a finger over the plug hole. If you can then something else is wrong such as valve clearances too tight and valves not shutting completely.
