Lubrication/loctite points & protecting rubber/plastic components

I thought use this post for the lubrication section. I think it's most important to do this on a regular basis to stop premature wear on cables,rubbers,o-rings/rubber components/plastics ect.

You may have your own routine for doing this & if your happy stick to it. I just find through alot of trial & error that this is the best methods for me.

I will start with cables.

Because it's easy to apply i like to use lithium grease in a spray can. This is used for all wire cables excluding the speedo drive cable.

Important: It is most important that you use the correct grade high temp grease for speedo cable. Do not use spray can lithium grease for this.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Onto rubber grease...

Rubber grease has many uses (don't get ideas :) but comes most handy for rubber o-rings/seals & diaphragms.

To ouline a list of things i lubricated here are the most important.

..................

All O-rings

Rubbers

Rubber seals

Chain sliders & rollers (for the chain roller bearings i use Moreys bigfoot)

...................

I also like to use rubber grease for protecting components from the elements,water/heat/air/ect.

These are some of the things that i have used it on for protecting...

Airbox, battery box, intake boot, side gaurd rubbers, wiring harness (especially near the exhaust),frame rubbers, fuel tank rubbers ect. Basically anything rubber or plastic.

The main thing to remember is to wipe any excess off or dust will collect easy.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Okay now steering, wheel bearings, shocky linkages & speedo drive.

For all the above i like to use Moreys bigfoot grease. It is really sticky & comes out more stringy than melded mozzerella cheese wink I'm most impressed with this grease & will ''stick'' to it from now on. I have only recently been introduced to it by a local mechanic but so far so good. If it exceeds timiken (which was what i used to use) then it's gotta be good

I also use this for any pivot points such brake pedal pin/gear lever spline/footpeg pivot points ect.

Loctite

I like to use loctite on any bolt or thread that holds a ''moving'' component on without a locking tab. I use this method with cars, trucks, boats, ect. so it works well with any situation. If you read the manual to find these loctite points you may miss out a loctite point. Using my method i never go wrong because as i said any thread or bolt/screw ect that holds a moving component on needs it (unless it has a self locking nut) or it will loosen from movement...simple.

If i think of anymore important info i have forgotten i will update this later.

.............................................

Thanks for reading,

                             Jarrah.

Finally my rear shocky has arrived. This is it after i gave it a clean with Silvo Polish....

Other side....

I admit to going overboard on the polishing but looks a treat.

Will be installing it asap so new updates back in the thread.

Still waiting on my steering bearing cover but it should be here by the end of the week

I got my rear pegs & thought this was the best way to show people.

I used the rubber lining from a rear TTR250 master cylinder brake line to stop them damaging the paint. It was the only thing that i could find that was skinny enough & fitted over perfect.

I fitted in over the peg so it gets held down by the inside washer. It also makes them nice & tight so they won't fall down. You should be able to see this from the pics below...

..................................

Stiil waiting on the steering bearing cover & the back wheel before i go any further.

Stay tuned wink

Not long now if the weather holds out aww

I bought it from powersportsplus. I can't blame them as i have given them the right & royal run around & they have been quite quick to ship. It has just been Christmas/New year so things have slowed down during shipment/customs ect. Your brake dust covers (rubber boots) came awhile ago & i have them fitted so no need to worry about any of your items wink

The end can't be to far off now jarrah, you must have put some serious hours into polishing and sanding all the parts, it will pay off in the end though! I bought a ex demo wr250x back in August with 800 miles on it so basically it was as new. I have it tucked away now for winter and have started trying to clean it up to get it back to how it was, the rear spokes are proving in nightmare as they have lost there shine, everything takes so long to try and polish back up to new.

The end is near....not sure when though wink

I know what your saying about the polishing & sanding no It takes many long hours & sore arms to produce the finished product but well worth it.

Sanding the rims & the polishing carby was the worst jobs ever doh Worth every second spent though for a good job

You have too many bikes Adam...time to sell biggrin

Had to edit this just to say this........NOT YOUR  TT-250R OE-95 Red 4RR1 cry it's too nice  to sell

I think I will be keeping both bikes for quite a while now, I have had quite a few bikes in the last few years and now am happy with what I have.
Just reading through your thread and I came across
Optional items

Nos kit $26.00

10 MicroBurst NOS Pressurized Nitrous Oxide Injection Refill Large 20cc Bottles $36.37
I didn't see that before jarrah, I will be interested to see your feedback on that when up and running!

Yeah i know what you mean...I'd keep em both too. I thought you might have more but it must have been the one in the pic i saw behind your ttr smile

I will not be able to use the MicroBurst NOS Pressurized Nitrous Oxide Injection Refill Large 20cc Bottles until it has any been well run in so it may be awhile before you get any feedback on this. I will be sure to let you know once it is run in properly though.

...................................

The weather has been a tease. This morning started off cloudy....then it was sunny as & not a cloud in the sky by 7.00am. Then it lighty drizzled....then the sun came out.....then it was cloudy....now looking like it might clear up but i aint holding my breath. If i don't spray the rims today or tomorrow i could be in for a two week wait just to spray them, then a week until i can ride it no So fingers crossed it will clear up

It did clear up enough & is now quite good weather for spraying.....around  20 degrees. This is both the wheels sprayed with Dupont Mazda  22V sunlight silver. This time i used a De Beer clear coat & achieved the same results as Upol if not better ...

It was hard to get good pics of the sparkle in the clear (once again) but you can see it a little in the pics.

What's even better then that..............I GOT MY STEERING COVER TODAY awwawwawwawwaww

I will be fitting it shortly aww

I  plan to buy aftermarket excel tarasago's in the near future (once i find them at the right price) so not much point re-spoking. It is however very hard to tape these so they had to be painted in the meantime wink

Will be uploading pics of my (nearly finished) bike shortly so.......

Stay tuned wink

Had my first ride yesterday It went well but had a few minor problems. The earth (at ressistor) had too much paint in the bolt hole & it started running like cr@p no

It did'nt take me long to work it out & i had it all sorted. It is so much better than my old bike & makes it seem slow smile Very happy.....can't wait until later on today biggrin

Here is a pic with the old rims on & no stickers (just about)...

I will take some better ones when i get the chance.

..........................

Enjoy,

          Jarrah.

Finally got a chance to take some better pics. Now before you say....that front brake line is suppose to go inside the front fork......My mate put it on....he owns a YZF450 & xt 225 serow so you think he would know but he did'nt.

I will be swapping that now. Have'nt managed to bleed the front brake yet. Had this same problem when i fitted the oversize master cylinder & waited three days until the air lock came out lol. I don't have an injection needle so i'll just wait & hope for the best Anyways heres some pics of my bike with the secret items fitted wink

Once again the rims are still to be changed for the ones i sprayed but waiting for the paint to cure.

Enjoy,

          Jarrah.

Awesome Jarrah,

I was tracking your work and waited for the final result, great job.

it might be weird but if I had the B&B rack I would take the rear fender off, I think it would look like mx style rear fender alone.

Thanks Adam wink I still have to get the seat recovered with black in the centre & the TTR down the side. Also the rims, tires, sticker kit.

It goes so well know i hardly reconize it as a TTR250 when riding it. It seems much faster than standard & rides like a dream. Just quietly I find myself saying fk i love this bike biggrin

Gotta help a mate put a 5 speed gearbox in his ute today so won't have time for much else today. Hopefully by the weekend i can put the stickers on & take some pics.

Stay tuned wink

First of all, thanks wink . Secondly, yes you read right. I bought the NOS kit from Brian awhile back. I will let everyone know what i think when i use it. (not until it's run in). When i do i will be making it a little richer to accomadate for the extra air going in from the NOS kit. Can't wait....but for now i am very impressed with it without NOS.

....................

When for a ride with a mate today. He owns a yz450f & a serow xt225. He took out the xt after not alot of hinting. He loves the little xt,even he is over 100kg he says it handles & rides like a dream & comfortable. I also like it & think the same. Anyway we rode over some massive hills today that were littered with big rocks. It was very hairy going down some of these hills with no front brakes no At a few points i thought i would just roll to the bottom but managed to stay on top of things with only a few slide outs. I am going to bleed those front brake if i have to buy a needle injector or not! lol.smile

Here is a pic of the bikes together at a (random) creek. Forgot to take more of the rough stuff but it was hard to stop (if you know what i mean ) smile

Finally got the front brake bled. What i ended up doing was taking the caliper off...pads out & gave it a pump until it pushed the pistons right out. I then undid the bleeder screw & pushed the pistons back in (while a mate held the front brake in)....Tightened the bleeder & all came good after a few pushes of the lever aww

It's running really nice but is a little hard to select neutral when bike is running....Because my clutch plates are fine i'm thinking that the springs are worn (had checked specs before fitting). It changes gears fine & not slipping.... So it can only really be that ..... or it just has a tight (newish) gearbox. Will be checking this when i do a service next.

Edited: I will be buying new springs just to be sure it's not them. It is alot better now though.

The usual cause is notching of the "fingers" on the clutch basket which catch the plates and stops them fully releasing when you pull the lever in.

Easily solved with a big file wink

I thought that but there did'nt seem to be any notching whatsoever. I will check it properly also as it may be just a burred edge. Pretty sure that the springs are'nt pushing far enough as the clutch is not fully disengaging but does disengage enough to not notice it much when stopped.. Not a big problem & seems to be getting alot better. Maybe just needs a good run. (& heavy duty springs or washers fitted). It really is'nt a problem now as nuetral is getting easier & easier to find wink

....................................................................

I have been doing more on my bike. I ended up risking all & trying to do it myself I have not had alot of pratice at this so i was a little concerned at how the job would unfold. I did read BMSteve's article on the ''how to's'' as this is who i got these off. It confirmed my mates thoery & what i had heard about applying these & figured i was ready to do the job. I am so glad all went to plan as this was alot of worry off my mind & gives me confidence in fitting the tank sticker. Here are some without the tank sticker (& offroad rims).

I'm still deciding on the fender yet but it will all come together soon aww

Another slide show with a better background but bad light. Will be making more yet lol (it's addictive). Went for a ride today & finally have all the little ''niggly'' problems out of the way so it was an awesome ride. I have no trouble keeping up to my mates YZ450F & it has heaps more top end

I can't credit the bike enough it is truely an offroad machine smile

Hey Jarrah, nice slides, I think you just need an oil cooler to finish the ultimate ttr.

Hey abbas, thanks for the feedback. I'm still not sure if an oil cooler will be practical offroad? I have been thinking more along the lines of fitting an aftermarket airbox & intercooler. It looks as though i may have to make my own though hmm Maybe i'll get an oil cooler but the intercooler comes first (with luck).

Also have to buy disc gaurds & get the seat recovered with black in the centre.

It will get there slowly though......I'm just glad i can ride it for now aww

I have got everything just right now. I never thought i'd say th about a TTR-250 but the power this thing is pulling is a little bit scary (at times). It runs every bit as good as the WR250 i rode awhile ago. It's hard to take off without it wanting to wheelstand or tire spin so aww I LOVE IT! awwawwawwaww

This thing has really opened my eyes to how fast these things can really go once fully uncorked aww

I still have not got past 1/4 throttle yet as i'm running it in. For now i can only imagine it at full throttle once run in properly awwaww

This was on a recent lonesome trip yesterday..

Enjoy,

I thought i had better update this thread for all the little problems i have had so far....

Had to retighten everything, including engine mounts ect. The reason for this was the paint between the two mating surfaces. Should be fixed now but i'll keep an eye on it wink

The fuel tap leaked & was a drama to boggy up to get home. Fixing it on the side of the road was not something i planned though. . I now have it fixed it properly.

Could not engage neutral whilst in gear. Geting heaps better & can get it in now but still needs better springs or washers as the clutch is still not fully disengaging. Not a big problem.

Paint in the earth bolt holes. Causes the battery to go dim & not charge the battery. Also a fair bit of popping in the carb. Ended up cutting out in the end completely. Another side of the road job no Easy fix though.

Now i still have a slight problem....The main jet ie. 150 is too big for the flow of the standard airbox. I do not want to cut or modify it in any way as i still have to register (MOT)  it soon.

For now i will just try out the standard (for Au models) #147 main jet with the Aftermarket Sigma #52.5 pilot jet. It goes great up until 1/4 throttle but not quite so good after 1/4. Also i have had to wind my air mixture screw right out for more air. Still goes great but i think until i get an aftermarket airbox i will go back down to #147 main.

Something else to watch.....Wish it captured me launching the jump & not just as i land but oh well....

Jarrah.

Got it sorted

The fourth position works a treat using the #150 main & 52.5 pilot. I may use the last setting once run in to lean it out a bit more but really happy with it for now. Wow this thing just gets better & better aww

I now have a TTR that is ''max'd'' out. I cannot go any further down on clip position or i will need more air than the standard airbox can put in. It will be good to run it in like this & then fit an aftermarket airbox (of some description:).

It does need to be put to setting N5. (last setting) so *I don't have to have my air screw sticking out like dog......um yeah biggrin

It is now getting red at the header pipe meaning it's too lean. (no backfires though ). Goes ten times better but i can't ride it like this no

My next option is to put the #150 main back in as i don't have a #148 0r #149 & do not know where to get one either. I will have to raise the needle postion to setting four from the

bottom. Hope that works Otherwize i will have to put the #147 in & try settings n1. from the bottom. (don't think it will help :(

It has been quite an epic re-build time has finally arrived that i can ride my bike. It feels like such a privilege to be sitting on it instead of working on it. I am REALLY enjoying it now that i have all the little troubles out of the way & all just right. I gotta say that it surprised me how well this thing goes, 10x from standard . It really makes you appreciate the trouble that Yamaha go through to build these bikes as they are absolutely superb!

It is not finished yet as i have the seat to recover & rims that i sprayed to put on but i'll upload this when done.

..................................................................................................................................................................................................

Websites that made it possible without it becoming too expensive

www.ebay.com.au

www.powersportsplus.com now www.partzilla.com

www.totallyttrs.com

www.boats.net

All these sites deserve a huge THANKS!
Also would like to say a big THANKS to Brian & Trish for helping me out with part & all that have helped me along the way. It does take a lot of effort to upload all this & takes some work to get it in writing. Glad i had people to give feedback & support to me along the way  so....THANKS HEAPS!

Tools that help make the job so much easier...
..............................................................
Engine stand (inspired by Brian)
Light duty tension wrench
Magnetic pick up tool
Clutch holder (made by myself)
Universal clutch puller (made by myself)
Grind-ed down & bent screwdriver (removing steering bearing races ect.)
5mm Allen key (cut off) on a socket/ratchet to remove bolts
Drill/grinder/welder
Cir-clip pliers

Things that make the job easier
......................................................................
Full repair manual.
Having all parts ready before starting (couldn't be helped in my case :)
Freezer (for bearings or bearing races/cups)
Keeping your job area clean & tidy
Having separate boxes/bags for different parts/components
Taking pics before removing anything you may not remember where it goes.
Keeping tools separate in little boxes/containers while using them
Making sure all bolts removed go back into the component (if possible) or with the components it goes with.
Internet (you must have it :)
Making sure you do not put any jet kit you may have bought in a ''safe place'' lol :)
.......................................................

Was it worth spending roughly $10.000 on doing it the way i have done?
..............................................................................................................................................
I will leave this question up to you. What i will say is that it ''may'' be cheaper to just buy a bike & rebuild it from there but you never know what your in for when you take it apart. At least this way i am assured of an upgraded bike that suit my needs & is also unique.
........................................................................................................................

In reality....
............................................................................................................................................................
I may have made this look easy but at times it was very frustrating considering i did everything myself (except i had a mate help install the engine). There was times where i was ripping my hair out trying to come up with a solution for things (like paint reacting) but it was all relatively easy in hindsight. It was very hard work, especially the  polishing parts & took dedication. Also waiting for parts to arrive was very long & tiresome.
..........................................................................................................................................................

In conclusion.
................................................................................................................................
All that hard work & dedication did pay off & was worth every bit of effort spent. I am so happy with the end result & I'm sure you will know why by now if you have been following this thread.

...................................................................................................................................

Cheers Brian,  & THANKS TO YOU TOO. I'm just glad to be part of such a great site & glad i can contribute so... good work Brian wink

Glad to know the picture updates are welcome.

Will be taking more when i get my seat recovered. (still to find Yamaha material symbol)

Also waiting on my front axle & back so i can bolt the rims that i painted on to it,weird it's not here....Hmm. might have to do some homework blankstare

I will only use the good rims onroad though as i'm not sure i want to get them scratched just yet wink

Can't credit the bike enough & better shut up about it now lol. I know...i know people ....Just the pics smile

There was more stuff that i did not upload in this thread but someday it may be fully completed. For now enjoy.
