Hi Brett. Daft question. Have you tried changing gears at higher revs? It may just be the engine is struggling if the revs are too low. If it only does it occasionally I would not think it's a major problem with the engine. I had a rattle with mine, which is a 2005 model, and I traced that to the chain guide roller which sits just above the swinging arm pivot. The chain would hit it at certain revs and in certain gears causing it to spin and rattle and vibrate through the frame. It felt like the engine sprocket was hanging off.

Look at the simple things first before you start pulling the engine apart!

Hope you find the problem

Peter

hey sometimes when i shift from 2-3 in low rpms the bike feels a little grumbly, like i am riding on really knobby tires, but once it hits a little higher rpms it goes away?  any ideas.  I change my oil quite a bit, after 300 miles, chain is lubed, and this problem happens just occasaionally.

Also before i put it away for the winter months , coming soon here in montanan, the 2006 i bought used with ?? miles i have put 3000 on it, other than general maintence should i be rebuilding or replaceing anything?  I have heard words of top end, bottom end, clutch plates and such.  But new to the motor game--

thanks

Not to raise any alarm bells but if it's not something simple it could be your Automatic cam tensioner on the way out. It may be worth checking this if nothing simple works.

Hard question that one,not sure if there is a solid answer to it but here goes nothing.

..................................................................................................................................

The only way you would be able to check it that i know of is dis-assemble it and check specs of everything.

Checking steps:

  • While pressing the tensioner rod lightly with fingers, use a thin screwdriver & wind the tensioner rod up fully clockwize.

  • When releasing the screwdriver by pressing lightly with fingers, make sure that the tensioner rod will come out smoothly.

  • If not replace the tensioner assembly

.........................................................................................................................................................

The above still may not work if you don't know how it should release when new

........................................................................................................................................................

It may just be easier to buy a manual cam chain tensioner to be safe. Only about $50.00 AU.

Check ebay. Here is a manual tensioner  Click here to view ebay image

I would not think so. You said it does it only occasionally. If it was a blockage you would get the problem all the time.

What gearing are you running? My old raid is running 13/49 when I got my new bike it was running the standard 14/44. I had some problems at slow speeds as the higher gearing was not allowing the engine rev. Going down a gear was better but then I found I was revving the engine a bit too much. It wasn't what I had got used to.

I am now running 14/52 which allows the engine to rev a bit higher in the gears that I use most of the time. It also improves the torque in the lower gears. As most of my daily ride is rocky with some steep climbs and nasty drops I never really get out of 3rd gear.

If you hear hooves think horses first before you think zebrasbiggrin

Hope this helps.

Peter

You would need to discribe this noise better, like where is it coming from exactly?

What does the noise replicate?

Is it loud?

Any other symtoms?

i guessing its not really a noise but a feeling.  It feels in the lower rpms between 2-3 that i am riding on really knobby tires, but in the higher rpms it goes away.  Last night i drained my fuel tank, removed and cleaned the both jets on the carb and should be able to take it for a spin today.  it starts as normal, but i am sorry i said it was a noise, more a feel
