Good morning, Greg. wink

If you take a look at this link - LINKY THINGY - you can find this site's information on fork oil:- “Lube new oil seal and carefully slot and lower down stanchion. Top up each leg ( I used 10w ) with 550cc of fork oil.

ALSO - if you take a look at the top left hand area of this page you will see a link called The TTR250 FAQ web pages (When you open the link you have to scroll down the page to get the info.) which will take you to a mine of TTR250 information and details and is well worth reading. confuse

Good info Martyn wink

I am over 17 stone so probably need 10 weight fork oil but, in retrospect, that's a big jump from Mr Yamaha's 1 weight for which the forks were designed.

If you are lighter than me (not difficult!) then 5 weight is probably the easiest to source from your local bike shop. I use Silkolene - not for any particular reason other than they have a good name!

I will go with Brian to start with (5w) and if to soft will give the 10w a try.

Keep the info and threads flowing i found this site to be excellent for finding out info.

Greg, to require the use of 5w oil you don't necessarily have to be too svelte. no I haven't needed to replenish or renew my fork oil - I'm about 12 to 13 stone.

Brian loves his pasties, which are easily obtained here in Devon and are magnetic to Brian.

However, he really needs to maintain his stamina and momentum by consuming them, hence the 10w oil in his forks. biggrin

Having said that I must admit that Brian is big boned and really doesn't look or act like a large guy. His TTR gets to places that others don't normally reach, I know because I've tried to follow. hmm

Changed the oil to 10w and adjusted height to spec. 130mm. Had a gap of 150mm before draining.

Another suspension mob, cant remember there name, suggested adjusting air gap to 100mm???confuseconfuse

I've had a couple of rides and am happy so far with the front suspension. biggrin A vast improvement over the old set up.

I ride with blokes on 450cc bikes so have to get into it a bit. Possibly simillar terain to where Brian goes.

Thanks for the advice.smile

Greg

p.s. Brian reminds me of my father in law. Knows all the bakery owners in NSW (Australia) by first name basis.

Just changed my fork oil it's been three years since the last change and it came out a bit black but in a lot better condition than the original oil after the first three years

I've gone back to 5w as the 10

Slowed the fork action more than I like

Here is a pic of today's old stuff

I've replaced my 5w oil with 10w and it's like holding a jackhammer on the trails now. My riding is 50/50 road off road and I generally don't air down my tyres as I go from one surface to another repeatedly on my favourite loop rides. I'm going to replace it with 5w again as soon as I can.

Yamaha fork oil CST ratings.. @ 40*C
Yamaha 01 = CST 15.60
Yamaha G5 = CST 17.70
Yamaha G10 = CST 33.20
Yamaha G15 = CST 47.30

Forget about the WT rating thats a old SAE number for lubecation..
Fork oil you need to know the flow rating or the CST "Centistroke" rating

Any fork oil with the same CST rating will have the same flow..
but the WT rating... a 10wt oil from one company can be the same as a 15wt
from another...

I use Motul factory line light , has a CST rating of 18.30 .

It's been a while but I've have changed back to 5w oil 100mm from the top of the tube

11clicks out

Very happy with them

The heavier oil is good for faster rough stuff but the 5w Is good eberwhere

I'm 6-3 105kgs  standard springs are OK

Make it 7.5 wt .That's what I use .Mix a 5 with a 10 in equal proportions.Works well on most surfaces .
