If you take a look at this link - LINKY THINGY - you can find this site's information on fork oil:- “Lube new oil seal and carefully slot and lower down stanchion. Top up each leg ( I used 10w ) with 550cc of fork oil.”
ALSO - if you take a look at the top left hand area of this page you will see a link called The TTR250 FAQ web pages (When you open the link you have to scroll down the page to get the info.) which will take you to a mine of TTR250 information and details and is well worth reading.
I am over 17 stone so probably need 10 weight fork oil but, in retrospect, that's a big jump from Mr Yamaha's 1 weight for which the forks were designed.
If you are lighter than me (not difficult!) then 5 weight is probably the easiest to source from your local bike shop. I use Silkolene - not for any particular reason other than they have a good name!
Greg, to require the use of 5w oil you don't necessarily have to be too svelte. I haven't needed to replenish or renew my fork oil - I'm about 12 to 13 stone.
Brian loves his pasties, which are easily obtained here in Devon and are magnetic to Brian.
However, he really needs to maintain his stamina and momentum by consuming them, hence the 10w oil in his forks.
Having said that I must admit that Brian is big boned and really doesn't look or act like a large guy. His TTR gets to places that others don't normally reach, I know because I've tried to follow.
Just changed my fork oil it's been three years since the last change and it came out a bit black but in a lot better condition than the original oil after the first three years
I've gone back to 5w as the 10
Slowed the fork action more than I like
Here is a pic of today's old stuff

I've replaced my 5w oil with 10w and it's like holding a jackhammer on the trails now. My riding is 50/50 road off road and I generally don't air down my tyres as I go from one surface to another repeatedly on my favourite loop rides. I'm going to replace it with 5w again as soon as I can.

agree 100% its so much better with 5wt i might shase up a better spring one day
Forget about the WT rating thats a old SAE number for lubecation..
Fork oil you need to know the flow rating or the CST "Centistroke" rating
Any fork oil with the same CST rating will have the same flow..
but the WT rating... a 10wt oil from one company can be the same as a 15wt
from another...
I use Motul factory line light , has a CST rating of 18.30 .
The oil has improved the fork ation still may invest in more suitable springs
got the rear shock booked in soon for a service and spring set up to my weight as i ride seated due to a car going through my leg years ago (have to move my whole leg to change gear as my ankle doesnt move much )
