What type of fuel do you run?

I have just started to run 95RON as apposed to 91RON Unleaded in my 97OE, the bike certainly runs better and cleaner i.e. no soot, but has been difficult to start electrically when cold. I don't have a hope in hell of kick starting it. Could this be the fuel or has something else eventuated?

In UK we only have a choice between ordinary and super leaded, unless you can source the expensive un-leaded supplies which are few and very far between.

I usually re-fill with the cheapest available. biggrin

If your bike was running well on 91 octain and now doesn't run very well on 95 octane then, as long as you have changed nothing else, your suspicion has to be on the petrol.

I have read that with the 5% ethanol additive currently being supplied the petrol has a shelf life of just a few weeks before it seems to lose its volatility. It also dissolves certain plastics, fibres and metals in an alarming way. bleh

My old BSA petrol tank is away for refurbishment having been attacked. The Petseal coating has been dissolved by the modern UK petrol and the tank started leaking again. hmm

I had this problem on a tank that was rusted inside, I selaed it and 6 months later had a big lump of goo in my tank!

On the original question, The standard unleaded in the uk is 95, and the expensive posh stuff is between 97 and 99 depending on the supplier, I use the cheapest availble in trail bikes!

In Australia we have 3 types 91, 95 and less common 98, all Unleaded.

No Leaded fuel is available.

For 10 litres of fuel the the difference between the higher RON equates to less than $2,

Our ATM fees in Oz cost more than that!

It's the other way round, the old girl runs better on the higher Octane but is harder to start when cold, having said this the bloody thing fired straight away tonight disbelief

Went out for a spin last night and noticed the popping you are talking about. The starting issue has sorted itself out, now fires up instantly. I can't help but thinking that since I have owned the bike I have burnt out a heap of residue throughout the engine. It runs better each time I ride it

You've got it the wrong way round there Martyn, we're on unleaded it's leaded that's hard to come by.

Correct, Truslack.

I blame my "senior moments" which occur with more regularity nowadays.

Sometimes they meld into a whole day, I think! confuse
