Front brake hose repair?

I need to replace the front brake hose on the project TTR250. New originals are about £80…

There is a stiff plastic/PVC black sleeve over the brake hose that runs between plastic retainers on the fork leg. This wears and over time cracks and splits. I have about 10 units I have taken off breakers and all the hoses are damaged in the same way.

I have sawed the metal union off a hose and it is then relatively simple to remove the sleeving. It’s approx 8.65mm ID and 11mm OD. I have Googled myself senseless and the best I can find is PVC sleeving for looms but its only 0.5mm thick and I need about 1mm.

Any ideas as to where I can source the sleeving please?

If I can get the sleeving then I am hoping Hel (who have a shop not far from me) could fit a new union to replace the one I sawed off – I only lose about half an inch of hose.

Brian, I had a Hel brakeline made up for my TTR ; and it has blue covering.

I never fitted it to mine because I managed to source a replacement from a mate of mine.

If you like, I can drop it round some time. wink

I got a Hel replacement brake line on my TTR from many years ago after I damaged the original doing a bit of tarmac surfing disbelief

Although it does the business, it didn't match the original and I had to make a few mods for it to "move" properly as the top loop of line was much too floppy. I wouldn't mind a look at yours Martyn to see if its any better. Can you recall what it cost please?

My thinking is that I should be able to repair the original with a bit of sleeving and one new union. Hopefully a cheap repair that can be repeated once proven.

Hi Brian,  with the HEL line did it foul on the odometer when braking and lifting the front wheel, Im thinking of upgrading the front line for a little more bite and have had the same thought.  What was your work around.  Cheers Daz

Hi Daz

I can't remember what the problem was but it fouled something!

Pic below shows my solution which was simple and easy but looks a bit untidy cry

I used a bit of the stiff plastic sleeving from the old cable.

Can anyone on here with an after-market brakeline fitted to their TTR advise how it works in terms of moving with the forks please - doesn't it just flop around all over the place?  confuse

Sorry for the apparent delay in replying, Brian.

Grandhildren and fifth birthday intervened!

When I ordered a replacement for the TTR front brake I was sent a shorter length of hose than the original. 

I informed Hel and offered to return it for one of the proper length. They gave me a hose of the correct length and told me they didn't want the original returned.

I therefore have a correct length hose and a shorter version.

I can swing round TTR Towers if you want - but maybe when the drought weather abates, eh?

Did anyone feed back on this topic?

I'm looking at replacing the front lines on both our TTRs as the current ones are work through from abrasion on the plastic guides. I have found Hel and Wezmoto lines on eBay that will fit and are certified, but I don't think either has the reinforcing sleeving that the original and the Venhills that Brian sells.

So, do unreinforced hoses flop around and get kinked? I'm not worried about looking original, just would like a replacement that won't wear so dangerously on the hose guides and needing to cover 2 bikes, the £45 ea for Venhills is a touch more than I wanted to pay!

Hi Simon

Don't forget our Venhills are 50mm longer than standard to accommodate bar risers or higher handlebars and they are especially made for Totally TTRs - hence the premium price wink

Wont be as tidy but we sell hard pvc spiral hose covering to stop hydraulic hoses wearing on machines

You wouldnt have to cut the banjo off the end it would just need a cable tie top and bottom to hold it on

Any hose specialist will sell it ,this one has an inside diameter of 10 mm and also comes in black !

cost (trade price to us £1.50 per metre so worth a try)

Another thing you could try would be to get a hydraulic hose made ,if you got the size of the baljos they can be bought seperatly

Smallest hose we stock is 1/4 ID and about 14mm outside (smaller sizes may be available) it has a thick rubber outer and braided steel inside so would never wear through

That is exactly the solution I am currently using to take the rub off of the already exposed braided casing!

 The Hell hose I have on the XT660 has a hard clear plastic cover over it from just above the caliper to the top clamp

to hold the hose ridged so it moves up/down with out bending as the forks compress/exstend...
